can i use my microwave to soften butter for sugar cookies?
One would think so, huh? But unfortunately, even with the "defrost" setting, I have never managed to do better than softening half of the butter and melting the other half...even with incredibly short cooking periods. Of course, I don't know how your microwave is, but I recommend just doing it the old-fashioned way, as time-consuming as it is, you'll get a better result, and a lot less hassle.
I have always had good luck softening butter in the microwave. The key is to keep the setting low and to keep the time short, repeating at several intervals, such as 30 seconds, rest a minute, 30 seconds, rest a minute, etc. If the butter separates you can stir it to a nice consistency.
