Why do microwaves have a popcorn button if you can't use it?

It is a well known fact that the popcorn button burns popcorn, so why do they even have a button for it?

Sales! The more whistles & bells, the more likely someone will buy it.

I think ttag's spot on - if you're looking at two microwaves, and one has all of these options like 'popcorn, 'vegetables,' etc., and one doesn't, I think most will go with the one featuring the additional options (even if they're completely useless).

Personally, however, I think nothing beats making popcorn over the stove with a little coconut oil, and staying away from that microwave altogether - perhaps I'm a nut, but microwave's just give me the creeps smile
