Absinthe is a very strong-180-190 proof liquor. It was originally intended as a cure-all tonic. It is infused with herbs, notably wormwood. Absinthe is most commonly consumed as a cocktail known as "the green fairy."  Absinthe is poured into a glass, and a specially-made spoon with holes is placed on top. A sugar cube is put atop the spoon and the glass is filled with icy water slowly, melting the sugar as it pours through. this yields a cloudy, green drink. The drink became very fashionable in France for an era. It is fabled that Absinthe has hallucinogenic effects. Toulouse LaTrec lived and died thanks to the alcoholic content of Absinthe. Much mllder Pastis turns yellow not green without sugar added, but it has a similar taste and at least a 100 less alcoholic proof than "the green fairy". David
