What's a sulfite?
My friend knows someone who has an allergy to sulfites. Apparently it's quite serious for her.
I've heard the term "sulfites" before but don't know what they are or how they wind up in food. Can someone help me with this? I think that I've seen a warning label on wine bottles before that says "contains sulfites", but that's the extent of my knowlege on the subject.
Sulfites are salt of sulfurous acid that is used as a preservative in some foods, wines, beer, dried fruit and nuts. Some people have severe allergies to such preservatives and are normally restricted to eating only organic foods and vegetables. They cannot eat any processed foods or it could trigger breathing disorders and show symptoms of other ailments such as rashes and hives.
