Make up a four or five digit number ex.  12345

Add the total of the digits  ex.     12345 = 15

subtract the total from the original sum  ex.  12345 - 15 = 12330

Circle any one of the numbers  ex  12(3)30

Give me ONLY the numbers you did not circle and I will tell you which number you circled.

I don't want to hurt my head figuring this out tongue what's the trick behind it?

  8. Randy Godwin profile image59
    Randy Godwinposted 14 years ago

Okay, here is the answer to how this trick works.

This trick is based on the number 9.   For example : if you give me the numbers 123, I would add them up and get 6.  I subtract 6 from 9 and get 3.  The number you circled would be 3.

If the numbers totaled over 9, say 12, them you would subtract the total from 18 and get 6.  And so on with multiples of 9 such as 27, 36, etc.

The only time there is not a certain answer is when the given numbers total 9, 18, 27, etc.  Then the answer is either 0 or 9.

There are other tricks using nine as a basis.  It's an interesting numeral!  Enjoy the magic!

Aw, that would've ruined all the fun!

Have you ever tried to figure out just WHY it works that way?

          1. Randy Godwin profile image59
Randy Godwinposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yes, I actually discovered the trick in an encyclopedia years ago and it was explained fully, but I haven't thought about why it works for a long time.  There are some other neat tricks using the number nine but this is my favorite.

As I said earlier, it has earned me a few beers on occasion!
