    I might sound silly, but can someone explain what a Beta site is, to a techno idiot?

      A site on which some kind of work is still going on, mainly for improvement, is called a Beta Site.

    It might break, it might go off-line, there are probably still things that are missing or don't work as expected. Normally though they are not major issues because the owners wouldn't release something widely until its working 90%

    Often you will need an invite to join a beta site - which is just a way to manage growth

    If its something you are interested in, join - your feedback will help the owner develop the site

    @Benson:
    Normally it's a site that is still in testing mode, and may have limited functionality.
    You may also experience problems using it, so it''s a good way of the developers saying "Use this at your own risk".

    It's ijnteresting to note that Google GMAIL is still bearing the "Beta" label, although it has been operational for a long time, and is one of the most used email services.
    @Jyoti:
    You would normally apply to use a beta site from the site iteslf, or in response to some sort of invitation.
    There's no "rules" as to who gets access. or the method of invitation.

    Regards,
    Eric G.
