Pros and Cons of Agricultural legislation

   I figured it was time to start this thread as things were getting warmed up in the soil post. 
   Hopefully here we can discuss what laws are good, bad and needing revision for our farmers.
   
   First point to consider is, will the institution of more laws make or break the current farmers back? Or create a harmonious balance between man and nature?

   More legislation will do what it always does, regardless of the industry.
   
   It will destroy the small operations and favor the large ones that can afford to pay off the right politician.

      That is so true - not going into the GM crops thing too much, but Monsanto wants Europe to accept them, Europeans do not want them. If the credit crisis kills Monsanto, some good will come out of it!
      
      Legislation is always a balancing act - whether there is a balance that will suit everybody is debatable.
      
      No legislation is not the answer, but too much creates hurdles that small farmers cannot afford to cross.

   You forgot about creating more government jobs to promote, implement, and enforce this legislation
   
   And then even newer legislation will be required, to fix the problems created by this one, with its own set of jobs, and so on, ad infinitum...

   I think that the old system to which you refer to is taking a lot of heat now Mark. As such, it could very well be that the voice of the people, focused by the right lobbyists might accomplish some good legislation if only we were to try.
   
   Yes, the legislation in place does favor those who can buy the politicians.  However, with a few adjustments to policy, even those big operations will have to make some effort to reduce greenhouse gasses and use proper soil management.
   
   I`m sure that profit dips will speak loud enough to force companies to adopt new legislation.  More and more companies are having to adopt these policies, not only to create a greener image, but to maintain competitive profit margins.

   Democracy is an ongoing story because it is a vision. And as all visions go, they never quite pan out as envisioned. But as all visions go, it is a good concept to hold to and to work on for the betterment of humanity.
   
   Staying positive and moral are the key issues and need to stay together (moral as in doing what is best for humanity as a whole and the environment, too).
   
   Just as praying and standing up to have your voice heard can be answers, it takes a unified effort with enough of a common vision to take hold and create desired actions and results.
   
   Being pessimistic gets us no where, fast. Though, yes, it takes fortitude to sustain and accomplish any goal.
