   So I posted a well written sales hub about Baseball Glove Oil. I saw it was instantly indexed around the third page on google. So I went really hard to promote this article and submitted about 40-50 backlinks. I went back to check it today and it went down a page.. Could you guys explain why this has happened?

   it looked like spam links to google... the links have to be consistent and not 50 one day and 0 the next 10 days.

   Just give it time. It's not unusual for a new hub to rank very highly very quickly, and then fall to the back of the pack for a while. Your hub is so new, it just might be the normal course of things and not necessarily due to the backlinking (although you got some good advice about that).

   I doubt your backlink spree has even been indexed/measured yet.
   
   You havent mentioned the time frame of the 50 backlinks? A big domain,web 2.0 and all can usually handle some bursts of links w/o any complaint from the google monster - not wise to do for smaller sites though.

            I had a roadtrip to Missouri and sent it into about 50 social bookmarking sites in one day.. Bad or good?

   40 links is not really a great problem for HubPages. Form a links point of view the site in total probably picks up thousands of links every day. If it is a problem associated to links it’s more likely to be the issue is the type of links, if all 40 are from blog comments for example then flags will be raised. Spread links over different types of resources, blogs, social media, press release sites, article syndication etc and alternate the link text.
   
   It quite normal for a hub to fade quickly after a good initial ranking, it’s the way Google treats hubs and blog posts. Continued link building will bring it back. And as sunforged points out those links might not even be indexed yet.
