Where did hip-hop go? Has it been lost? Can somebody point me in the direction of something currently on offer which brings something new to the table?
Hip-hop, once one of Americas greatest exports, doesn't seem so great anymore - if the talentless cretin Lil Wayne is all that you have to offer...
This is what I am talking about....
The Pharcyde
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3qMdku … re=related
Wu Tang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpL0xVIYbnU
etc etc etc.... where is the REAL hip hop? The lyrical talent? The innovate beats?
Has hip-hop died? Feel free to point me into the direction of something decent....
Im not quite as adept at finding new music as I once was, It would seem you have similar tastes as I though.
... A tribe called quest, KRS-ONE, Mos-def, Slick Rick and Nas as examples of music I miss:
I would point out that "real" hip hop still very much exists It can be found on street corners and car trunks across the world being sold in individually made and small label productions.
Your two examples are quite disparate (early west coast :Pharcyde and early east coast:WuTang)
Two good places to start:
The Wake Up Show:
http://ursession.com/wakeupshow
and Last.fm ( put in bands you like, get recommendations for similar music) .. i get exposed to new and old music alike that really fits my taste as a result of letting last.fm play in the background.
http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/The%2B … larartists
I'll try that, SF - not sure if my slow connection can handle streams, but it is worth a shot.
Ryan - it is a few years since I was a member, but I used to subscribe to emusic.com for 90 downloads per month. They specialise in niche markets rather than the mainstream pap. I found loads of really old punk stuff on there and they also have an excellent recommendations and similar artists section.
I think that they have a free trial, so it might be worth giving it a try and seeing if you can find some hip-hop. I like old school rap, but never really listened to much hip-hop, so I can't be any more help than that, I am afraid.
Yes I know the stuff of Quest, Nas and Mos-Def....
Last.Fm seems like a good idea, I always forget about that place
I liked Jurassic 5 too. To be honest I prefer non-aggressive hip hop, but Wu Tang were an exception....
The only recent stuff that I have liked is DJ Format and the stuff he did with Abdominal.... it seems like Hip hop has emigrated to Toronto!
I will go and check out that Wake Up stuff now... will keep me busy for an hour, thanks
Nas is still quality though, a lot of strong messages in his tracks.

Maybe...hip-hop...flip-flopped? But, I think those that still love it...still listen to it and hold it with high esteem. It was never my style...but I do like all the cool rhymes!
Hey Ryan,
I like you and many others have been waiting for some kind of real talent to emerge from hip hop, however most of it has gone commercial in an effort to make money. There is very little passion in the genre anymore. I first would say to you and anybody else that everything out right now isn't bad people just aren't listening the right way. And that anyone who thinks hip hop is just about money women and drugs have never really heard this "jazz birthed" art form. I would encourage you and all those who have never really HEARD Hip Hop to check out - "Revolutions Per Minute" by (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek) Talib is probably the best MC on the planet, but that's another argument. Also there is an unsigned artist in Atlanta by the name of Stanza that is pretty sharp lyrically. So to answer your question, real hip hop is not dead........it just doesn't get any radio play! Hope this helps.

It was "Down with Everything!" back in the 70's. Yes, they had love-ins and wore flowers in their hair and fought for human rights. But they went too far in many ways. "Love The One You're With" was taken literally. "Make Love not War" was taken literally. The right to...
