I have decided to get a second dog, largely as canine company for my 3 year old Labrador X, Rusty. He is a very playful, extremely affectionate and clingy dog.
Several people have suggested that he really needs a canine companion, as I cannot be at home 24/7. Observing him since the death of our kitten recently, I have to agree.
The new family member has to be younger than 3 years, and able to get along with Rusty, who I am hoping will take on a mentor role if I end up with a puppy.
Living in the country, I have a good size garden for running around in, and there are plenty of quiet country lanes for walks.
What breeds would you suggest? I am not adverse to shelters, as Rusty and I rescued each other.
My absolute favourite breed is the Lab, but I am open to others.
If only I am near there I can play with the dog, I can talk to animals more than people. I love dog and horses, I can't recommend other dog except another Lab?

I have two lizards and a frog...ye can have one or all.
well there are always SO many lab mixes at the shelters. But I would suggest going to a shelter and letting the dog find YOU. Thats how you end up with the perfect match. You will feel a bond when you find the right dog. Some shelters also let you bring your dog in to see if your dog and the potential new dog get along with eachother. The paperwork on each dog at the shelter will say whether or not they are good with other dogs so thats what I would be looking for and from there, just go with your heart. Thats really the best and only way to find the perfect match.
I noticed that you sad, "He is a very playful, extremely affectionate and clingy dog."
Plus he is 3, so that also explains why he's 'clingy!'
Rather than buy another dog... why don't you save your $s and Hire A Leg and Foot?
COOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLL That Didn't Take Long
Even Better... I Caught an Aussi Yahhooo!!!
A leg and a foot for a very playful, extremely affectionate and clingy dog? Ummmm... If I said... "Shake a Leg!!!" Would that Help?
Did you know that the Biggest Complaint that Posties had was that affectionate, clingy dogs used to bunt their legs and feet?
LOL! Very good, Pearldiver! You did not get THIS Aussie, though. I knew exactly what you were getting at
That may have been a problem if I was not a responsible pet owner, and had Rusty snipped and chipped.
Rusty was abused and dumped by his previous owner, so I cannot go out to the toilet without being followed. If I shut the door while I am out there, he sits outside the toilet whining until I open it again.
He knows I am talking about him, and has just come into the study and jumped on me.
Okay, okay, I will tell them! Rusty says to say hello to you!
OMG he is SO ADORABLE!
He reminds me of a kelpie x daschund x miniature foxie I used to have. If you ever don't want him, SEND HIM OVER HERE!
Hi WryLit.
Rusty has a bit of Kelpie in him, but the Lab is stronger. The Kelpie means he always wants to round things up, and the Lab means big feet and a lot of chewing and digging which he has finally grown out of.
I told him about your offer, and he started wagging his tail. Maybe I will leave you guardianship of him in my will
A word of warning though... he does not like men (apart from my partner), so if there is a Mr WryLit you could have a problem.
Hmmm there is a Mr Wrylilt, but he pretty much rolls over and asks for a scratch when I come near him too so I think they would probably get on...
My dog's name was Sandy.
He's a Beauty and he's insecure if that's the case.
The problem with another dog will be transferring his dependence on you, who he sees as the boss of his 'pack.'
You have to build his confidence - just like with people.
Have you just considered a dog handling/obedience class?
They love that because it helps them build their confidence and you notice the change in their nature really quickly.
They mix with other dogs and get to skite about their owners!
Yes, looked into that. There is one place in the district (I live in the country) and that is run 8.00am to 9.30am Sunday mornings. I work in a 50 kilometres (31 miles) from here from 7.30am to 1.30pm Sundays.
Sometimes escaping to the country can have a down side... like 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) to the nearest boozer!
When I lived in the country, I had a Belgium Shepard named Brandy. I wound up bringing home a puppy who my neighbor thought was too ugly to sell...sad to say, she was right. Anyway we named him Burt, and he and Brandy loved one another...I had gotten Brandy when he was two, and he was about eight when I came home with Burt...Burt would copy everything that Brandy did, they were such good friends...So I'd say...do it...get your dog a dog friend!

My pet dog died today. I am devastated and it seems will never recover from this tragedy. It almost seems the end of the world for me.

If I lived in the US I’d be inviting those in the path of the giant hurricane to come stay at my home for a few days ... to keep them safe until the danger has passed.I know of two families in South Carolina and Virginia who I’d love to quickly get on a plane to somewhere safe.
