Can anyone give me some advise on what should I look for before hiring SEO companies who will be working on my websites? I want to get the most what I will be paying for.

The most common point first has to be noted was the age of the site. from how long site is live on search engine and their customer testimonials. Before investing the money in the seo firm the ranking report about the site is plays the important role in finding the actual performance of that site.

    Below are the check points,
    1) There packages
    2) Portfolio (List of websites with there current position) Talk with at least some one you find of your industry
    3) Don't do long term contract rather do monthly contract and with small budget (not more than 500 bucks per month)

I am running a small SEO firm and what I suggest is check out their portfolio and find out about what they're exactly doing.

We provide our clients with monthly reports that include a work log and details what we're doing for them and show progression of their keywords.

Before hiring a SEO agency ask them about their previous works and results they have achieved for their clients last few days.
Another thing you have to think is the budget you have for your business promotion.

First of all, see how good they are at their own game - have a look at what keywords they use by right clicking on their home page, and clicking 'view source'.  Find the 'meta keywords' section and then google each of the words listed.  See how far up the rankings they come for their own SEO and you will be able to see if they're any good!

Just remember that if you don't know much about SEO, it's really easy to get boondoggled. You need to know what search terms are going to be the most relevant to your business, as in, actually get looked for by people needing what you sell.

If you are wanting a real SEO/IM campaign set up you are going to have to invest a lot of money. I am currently being paid between $28 and $35 an hour to do SEO work for companies, and have some higher offers on the table.  Be very wary and maybe try and use a service that a friend has used successfully, there are plenty of people out there who will just spam out some backlinks or change a few H tags.

Pro Tip - If you ask for a proposal and they talk about keyword optimizing your Meta Tags - Don't use them.
If they cannot explain what either Micro Formats or RDFa is - Don't use them.
If their evidence of past experience involves getting a site to the top of Google where they have type the web address or the keywords in the domain in to Google, don't use them. Look for people who can beat the odds.

There's no question--you definitely have to be careful when choosing an SEO company. Check out FindYourSearch.com's article at http://findyoursearch.livejournal.com/5990.html on the topic to learn more about how you can avoid making a costly mistake.

time is money.  You are implying that if you SEO your own site there is  a zero cost. So, then your hourly, weekly or monthly time spent is valued at "0".  I thought that way early on too. Change your mindset and outsource when you can to more efficient.
