   The editorial “The Peace Process,” (April 26) states that “It is time for Mr. Obama ... to put a map and a deal on the table.” As if that act itself would induce the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to cease his defiance of the Obama administration’s interference — or any other country’s interference — in how he treats with the Palestinians in the so-called peace process.
   
   If President Obama is to achieve his goal of a two-state solution before the end of the year, he must first demonstrate to the highly influential Israeli political lobbies in the United States that his peace plan is overwhelmingly in Israel’s best interest. If the president can achieve this, Congress will support his plan over whatever Mr. Netanyahu presents to Congress during his planned visit in May.

   Despite the hope expressed by the editorial, the United States can no longer act as a credible and impartial chief negotiator of an Israeli-Palestinian peace. The United States has since 1979 — and most recently in February — too often sided with Israel on its relentless expansion of settlements on the West Bank in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 446. And the diplomatic Quartet of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States has apparently lost the momentum.
   
   The offer by President Abdullah Gul of Turkey to help Israel in concluding a peace agreement with the Palestinians (“The revolution’s missing peace,” Vuews, April 22) sounds more promising, especially since Turkey is well-positioned to draw on the earlier work of the members of the Quartet.

      I think the big question here is.... Should it really be America's job to make overseas countries play nice?

   The we - as US government and corporations, are getting paid for it, and you are paying the bill.
