pagerank completely depends on the number of backlinks that you have to your site. so to get it just comment on sites that have comment luv enabled so that you can get a large number of backlinks. just check out my hub to see a number of blogs which have comment luv enabled along with a high alexa rank.

Site Rank is generally based on UV (unique visits) per crawl.
SERP is based on meta content, meta keywords in page headers.

Recently, with the Google Instant addition, visitors can preview content in-page, versus the header, so visitors can now 'see' what they are looking for, instead of randomly clicking links.

SERP is based on the content itself and relevance to the keyword entered. In essence, how well your content matches the entered query and how many other pages have the same content phrase.

So, since visitors can visual your site beforehand, it is recommended:

    Site Is Visually Appealing.
    Lots of Original Content.
    Easy to Read.
    No Excessive Ads or Menus.
At Least 500 Words of Original Content on the Front Page, that matches your sites theme.
At least 2 Named Images ( lumbini pilgrimage.jpg  versus 2010_LUMBINI_01_DSC0001.JPG)

Avoid Using Wordpress or Blogger Based Themes on A Private Domain.

**Generally, sites with organic queried content tend to rank higher in the search return on the first and second pages. Sites with BOTH organic AND strong UV will get top position on the page and ranked higher.

    Good Luck!

    James.

        Hi,

Word Press is good on the Word Press server, yes, but on a private domain, the power behind it is lost, as it must pulls data away from their site. for sure, as a CMS and theme integration, it is good, not great, but good. If you really want great and better potential using a third party, SquareSpace is my vote. By far the best CMS out there today.

The advantage to having your site hosted on Word Press or Tumblr is they are already positioned with Site Rank via traffic and Page Rank based on massive amounts of content.

Truth be told, the site with the most relevant content wins. That is what SERPs are all about. More excellent pages, more page rank potential. So, to get ranked higher, publish lots of original pages and drive traffic to those pages. Also include share buttons on pages so visitors can assist in getting others to read your pubs.

        Good hunting!

        James.

Hi James, do you mean don't use a private domain name with a Wordpress.com site?

I thought at first you meant don't use the Wordpress software, but on reflection I don't think that's what you meant.

        Hi Marisa,
I meant to say use WordPress ON the WordPress server, instead of using it on a private domain assuming it will generate more visits/increase page rank on engines just because its "WordPress".
Same holds true for Blogger and Tumblr.

Pagerank goes up when pages with rank link to your page.

Page rank has no, or almost non influence on SERP. It is pretty simple math and it is sum of links pointing to your page. The biggest the page rank of page linking to you is the bigger the PR juice you will get from that page. Of course, PR is spread to all of the outbound links so if you page with 1000 outbound links (link farm) is linking to you, even with PR5+ you will get not much.

So, quality links from high PR links with low OBL and that will help.

Besides that, google does not update PR every 3 months like it was before so right now nobody knows when that will happen again. Some minor updates happens all the time but not major ones.

Which is to say, Pagerank goes up when pages with rank link to your page--and not to too many other sites.

I was starting with the basics, which is: get incoming links from real websites.

You can worry about getting picky later.

I have a Wordpress based site on a private domain at the moment which ranks on page one for a competitive keyword, only ranking 7th though but I'm backlinking a lot

I'm not sure I agree with the WordPress on a private domain thing, because I don't see why Google would penalize that, but not WordPress on the WordPress domain. There doesn't seem much sense behind that.

Now, truth be told, while high PR sites are usually in the top of the search engines, this doesn't mean a high PR site will always be on top. They may be far down the search engine chain.

The main thing that influences PR, from what I have seen, are getting DoFollow backlinks from other high PR sites. So doing some massive (but not spam worthy) backlinking will help.

While PR does not affect search engine rankings (but backlinks will), since most people perceive a high PR site as more valuable, you can sell a PR6 domain for a lot more than a PR2.

      Kin,
It is not the issue at all. Google, Yahoo or Bing won't necessarily 'penalize' you for using WP or the others, but on the WP, Blogger or Tumblr servers, you have a much better chance of getting ranked, if that s your short term goal.

WP off-site is just for theme design and (very limited) Client Controls. None of which has anything to so with SERP.

I am just finishing up a piece on this, explaining to folks how the hosting machine (godaddy, net-sol, etc) itself can actually effect your site and how it is crawled by engines, gets visitors and ranking.

I think domain names/branded architectures (like WP, Blogger, etc)do little with regard to getting users better traffic, as it is the user driven content that draws people to visit and read. Same applies to Hub Pages.

The best way to get better ranks is making the site simple, easy to flow/crawl, lots of organic topical content and using RSS channels to bring visits. For the savvy person, ad generators, link swaps/referrals -- even Quantcast -- can build ranking too, but that takes a pro.

Avoid backlinking! If you need to backlink, use the top social networking units, like FB (since FB is now united with Bing Search + its internal search results.) else twitter for realtime backlinking. Even better, a sitemap is best for indexing pages, which can rank faster in some cases.

      James.

Wow, so much bad advice here.  PR has nothing to do with anything other than a simple link algorithm.

It is all based on the PR of links coming in to a site, number of links on a page, etc. PR has nothing to do with quaity, and has very little effect on SERPS. If you really want to judge the quality of a site you need ot look at trust scores.
