   Please help me understand the November contest rules,
   QUOTE:
   Qualifying Requirements
   Contain a minimum of 500 words (if the entry is a photo gallery or poem, an explanation of the poem or description of the photos is required)
   Be properly categorized within the fictional story, poem, or image gallery category on HubPages
   Have at least one image,
   
   Does this all apply to poetry? Who writes a poem of 500 words? What kind of poem needs an explanation? This is crazy!!!

      1) yes
      2) clearly you've never read Beowulf or Paradise Lost.  500 words is short compared to either of those.
      3) having an appropriate amount of valuable content is integral to helping search engines and readers experience the page content as worthwhile. 
      4) as the Dude once put it, "that's just like your opinion, man."  if you don't like the conditions that HubPages has established for their contest, you don't have to take part.  I'm expecting a lot of the poets on this site are going to be jazzed by the chance for a contest and really go for it.

         2) Whoever designed this contest needs to know a little more than you do about the difference between a poem and an epic. The best poems in the English language are mostly under one hundred words. Shelley, Keats and Auden did not supply explanations with their poems.

                  In case the comment is disallowed, here is what I said:
                  I am not sure how long it takes for comments to get on here, but I  made this comment before and it has not appeared, so ... again ...the poetry aspect of this contest bothers me. I have raised this in the help forum here http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/83942. In addition to what I have already said, it is doubtful whether adding a picture necessarily adds anything to a poem. Often the poem is the picture. People may be simply adding a picture to comply with the rules, rather than enhancing their work.

      I have a couple of entries all ready to be published - both are poems and are less than 500 words. I've added plenty of text - I'm not explaining the poem, but explaining my inspiration for the poem and what it means to me - people will interpret the poetry as they want, but I'm simply adding a little insight.
      
      It's easy to get up to 500 words doing this.

         That very much much depends on the kind of poem you have written. There would be little point in posting a haiku for example, with a four hundred word explanation

            Oh believe me - I could do it - even if it's not going to win the competition it gets me an entry into the daily drawing - LOL
            
            I'll explain why I attempted to write a HAiku what I found difficult - where the origin of Haiku comes from, the rules for Haiku - the different forms (Tanka) etc - I'm an expert fluffer!

   I'm not sure that this is the right forum to post this, but since the topic of the poetry contest has been raised in this thread I'd like to respond. I think it’s wonderful that HubPages is holding a competition for creative writers, but I have some big reservations about the poetry word length requirement and the need for an explanation too. A poem is an intensely personal experience, both for the writer when they create the poem and for the reader when they interpret the poem. Every word is important. Forcing a poet to reach a minimum word length or to give an explanation for the poem can ruin the effect that the poet is trying to create. If a factual article isn’t long enough more facts can often be included; when a poem is “finished” according to the poet’s aims or feelings, it’s really finished (perhaps apart from some minor edits in the future).
   
   An introduction to describe why the poem was written, or to set the scene (but not to “explain” the poem) would work for some poems, but not for all of them. I understand that HubPages is a business, and that hubs with a minimum of 500 words are more likely to be indexed by search engines. Some poems will work with a 500 word minimum, but I suspect that a lot of good poems won’t be entered into the contest because of the length and explanation requirements. Good luck to those poets who do decide to enter the contest.

   The word length is because this is still a content site, and god content has a lot of words. So if it conflicts with pure artful poetry, that is a real tension that occurs when posting poetry as "content".
   
   You could always post a poetry set, or share something about how or why you wrote the poem, of give prose-poetry a try. Or not enter.

      Good suggestion PS. Poetry on HP seems so different from all the other poetry in human history that it should should probably be called by a different name, like "versifying" perhaps.
