On a few occasions now I have written a comment on somebody's hub (sometimes a long comment that has taken time and effort!), which has since disappeared. After I submitted the comment I could still see it. But then later when I went back to look for it, it was gone.
It could of course be that the hubber had decided not to include my comment for some reason, and that's fair enough. (Although I haven't written anything offensive - at least I hope not!)
But before jumping to this conclusion I just wondered if anybody else was having this issue of disappearing comments. This has happened on a few hubs by different authors.
And it's not simply the case that these hubbers have opted to authorise their comments before publication. If this was the case then I wouldn't be able to still see my comments just after I submit them.
Anyone else have this? (Maybe it's just me... )
I've made about a half dozen comments on hubs in the last couple of days and not had one problem. Not to mention, I've had at least a half dozen comments on my hubs which I responded to and not a problem.
If you comment on a Hub that has the comment capsule set to only show approved comments, you will be able to see your comment for the 10 minute window during which you can edit it, and then it will disappear and not be visible until the Hub author/owner reviews and approves the comment.
So that's one possibility.
Thanks Cagsil. Luckily have been able to post successfully and receive comments the majority of the time, just a few times I have lost one.
Relache, thanks. That is interesting, and it is perhaps a possibility. For the comments I'm talking about though, I didn't see the message that says (something like) "your comment will appear once it's been authorised by the author". So I'm not sure. But maybe you can't always see that message.
I should really save my comments at regular intervals so that they're not lost should they disappear..
If you go back to the hub where you commented, your browser may be showing you the cached version without your comment. Try refreshing and see if it appears. If it's still not there then check another day. It may be one where the author wants to approve comments. As relache said, you would still see it for 5 minutes to have a chance to edit it. Then it disappears until approved. If you don't see any comments dated after your's in a few days then you might assume the author didn't get around to it yet. Other than that, I never ran into a problem with comments getting lost.
The author can Deny a comment at any time, whether it has already posted or not. I have been going through my hubs lately and denying the trite one-liners because they might hurt my page rank and certainly aren't helpful to other readers. Same thing with the Fan Mail that appears on my profile page. Since those are the references I am showing to the world, I pick only the best. Denying doesn't delete it; I can still Approve it again next month. I can't see Denying a long thoughtful comment, however.
Howard, I do the same thing with both the comments and the Fan Mail. Sometimes when I see "You've got nice hubs" in fan mail I look at their Hubtivity for the fun of it. I usually see that they just followed several other people in the same minute or two. Obviously not enough time to actually have read their hubs.
I have to admit I've been too lenient with comments though. I should take your advice and go back and delete things that don't offer anything to the subject. You're right, it can hurt our ranking. One very well respected Hubber posted a comment in one of my hubs (on the subject of comments) stating that after she deleted some of these types of comments, her search engine traffic picked up.
Gosh Glenn, maybe I should actually DO to my hubs' comments what I said. I mean, I just whacked off a few in a hub or two. I need to systematically go through all of them. I'd also been thinking that hubs with only 1-2 comments total could probably keep whatever vacuous comments they had. It gives the impression, at least, of interested interaction.
Gee, what can I say Howard. I guess that's a personal decision you have to make. I have some hubs that took forever to start getting the first few comments. It happens.

I got a message to check my comments and was sent to my Tom Dooley hub and I cannot see any comments there although there should be some! How can this be my problem? I have nothing to do with whether comments are showing or not do I? It is suggested I might want to disable them until I can fix them....

Pretty much like one would have it on a blog - with the difference that I am talking about hubtivity here.I had posted a single comment to one of the hubs a while ago. I am not too interested in the topic, just wanted to share my experience and forget. Well, the thing is - for many months this hub...

I recently read a hub about ouija boards. I would have liked to comment on the hub only it seemed I couldn't because I wasn't a fan of the author. I don't intend to become a fan - not being exceptionally choosy here - just didn't agree with the philosophy behind the hub - but I would...

How do you react to hubs with comments disabled? As a hub reader, how important is it to you to be able to comment? Does it frustrate you when you are not allowed to comment on a hub? Will you still vote on that hub? Will you follow an author who disables comments? I wonder if disabling comments...

For years I have been diligent about responding to questions left on my hubs. But now I've discovered comments are being published on my articles without appearing in my Comments section, so I look like I'm rude and ignoring readers who go to the effort of writing.Today I spent ages waiting for...

Some comments I make on hubs are immediately unapproved - why?In two instances, I made a comment on a hub that didn't appear; it just said it had to be approved by the author first, and it thanked me for participating in the HubPages community. When I looked at my activity on my profile page, it...
