So I'm about 2 weeks in as far as signing up for HubPages (yay?!), AND deciding to try online writing, both as a hobby and hopefully a way to earn. I have read different hubs about writing here and anywhere else, and I most probably need to read more, I have also read through different success and failure stories of some hubbers.
Now, what I need is some insight if what I am planning to do for the next few months is right on track or not.
Finding my niche
It has been so long since I have written stuff, and quite honestly, I do not really know what I want to write about, yet. That is why I think ... that first and foremost, before I entertain issues about how to gain traffic and earn through what I write, I will need to decide what type/s of hubs I can be good at, or be comfortable writing about. I have set myself about 2 or 3 months to find my niche, while constantly writing about random stuff. Is this a good idea?
And the rest..
Learning how to properly use keywords, tags, and links. > to follow
When the time comes that I do find a niche, I'll need to know how to drive readers to my work. I have already read about some tools that I will need to be familiar with, also read that I need to be involved in communities outside of HubPages that cater to my selected niche. Although I would not be surprised if there are other ways to do so, since I haven't really thought about this part yet.
Honestly, I still have no clear idea .. that is why I need some feedback, if what I have set myself to do is on the right track or not. And if you think there are some more pointers I need to consider, please let me know also Thanks in advance for your insights to a novice with no sense of direction
That sounds like a good plan to me. I write about a variety of topics - and they tend to be centered around my many interests - personal finance, genealogy, and quilting - but I write about other things too as I think of them.
Staying within certain niches helps so that you can link them to each other.
I would also suggest before writing about a niche, check how many hubs already available on that.. this will save you from unnecessary hard work.
I would say carry on with what you are doing now.
Write on a wide variety of topics that interest you, and when you see one of them gaining a lot of search engine traffic, look closely at that hub to learn what brought the traffic, and then write more hubs around it.
Some people seem to think it is better for a subdomain to only write on one topic, but I have not seen evidence of that being so.
What I do know is that if you write a moderately successful hub, then you can write a whole series of hubs around that topic and link them all together with great success.
It does not seem to matter if your other hubs are on different topics altogether.
Hey Izzy just one question - I get some traffic to my tomato hubs and just some of them come from Google and the rest from HP is it possible that the HP visitors are actually google viewers clicking through the inter linking?
I guess its so but I was just wondering
BTW Izzy aren't you sleep yet I guess it's almost 7am right? It's just afternoon here
Yes it is quite possible that your hub is linked to a hub in subdomain you see the traffic coming from, which still makes it theoretically search traffic.
For example, I have one quotes hub that normally does well at Christmas.
So does a blatant plagiariser whose hubberscore has never risen above 11.
His subdomain wasn't hit like mine, but my hub is now seeing a lot of traffic via his hub, though nowhere as much as I could expect if my hubs was high in Google search like it was last year.
And it is almost 8am now. No worries, it's Sunday.

Writing has always been my way of talking when no-one is listening so finding HubPages is as good as picking up the phone and knowing there is someone on the other end of the line.My problem is that I have so much to write about I don't know what my niche is or if I even want one. What do you think...

What is more fun? Writing dozens of articles for a niche or writing all sorts of articles from holidays to teeth whitening? And leave aside the fun, what about the money - which has more potential? What would you rather do as a writer on HP - niche writing or free lancing?

Is it better to write hubs all in one niche or write about different things? So far, I have 13 Hubs published. I have been jumping around on topics, writing about what I am inspired to do some research on that day. I do have several focused on drug addiction, though. I wonder, is it better to write...

A few days ago I reposted a comment that another hubber had taken from Google. The comment stated that if you wrote about what you know, your reputation would improve. In fact, if you were writing about issue relating to money or health, unless you had some authority your articles would be graded...

This has got to be some sort of joke. This site is not an easy place to make a fast buck. I knew that when I started. I then did the apprenticeship. It hasn't done me one iota of good. I have written well over 70 hubs, some of which were HOTD. My earnings in the last week are [redacted] ...

I've noticed that I keep seeing HOTDs that fit the niche sites yet weren't chosen for the niche sites because they still have HubPages URLs. Why not save some time in the selection process for the niche sites and mine all the recent HOTDs and all of the Editor's Choice hubs for use on the niche...
