"Unfollow" showing

I am new to HubPages and still learning my way around - but really enjoying it so far! But I had someone start to 'follow' me and I presume because I didn't follow her back, she 'unfollowed' me. I'm not following anyone right now, just trying to get up and running first and have lots else to do but sit on HubPages all day - so don't really care.

But what really ticks me off, is that for some reason when I posted a new hub this morning, it's showing that I'm being 'unfollowed' by one (this is when I am signed in and I go to Home). Now, if a 'follow' is a pat on the back, then I am going to assume that an 'unfollow' is viewed as a slap in the face. Why is this even showing for all to see?  It has nothing to do with this hub I just posted! Is this going to show every time I post a new hub? Not happy!

Only you can see what is in your feed such as the follow and unfollow option. And the unfollow for the hub is not related to someone unfollowing you. It simply means that someone has chosen not to receive notifications on your hub.

As IzzyM said, it's nothing to worry about and it's not a slap in the face. Losing followers that are not genuine can only serve you well.

You are doing the right thing by not following back because someone follows you. Only follow people you are genuinely interested in reading their work.

      Welcome to HP!

How would that serve her well? I am wondering how many followers you and I would have left, by those standards. And is losing so many followers what you'd really want?

Why would I want a follower who is only interested in me following them? One less person leaving me spam fan mail and one less person who isn't really interested in my work. The point I am making is that now she knows that when a person unfollows because she didn't follow her back only relieves her of making the mistake of following that person out of curtsey.

I would rather have 2 followers that read my work than 10 who only followed me as their trend. Numbers mean nothing without the views to back them up. Followers who don't read your work serves no real purpose than to a show numbers in your profile.

I agree.  Many people click the follow button and do so hoping that people will follow them back.  It is meaningless unless they actually READ one's hubs and particularly nice if they take the time to leave comments.  Often I see a new person who signs up and then follows a great number  of people, often numerous ones per minute.  They couldn't even read the profiles that fast, muchless read a hub.

If, however, a person reads a hub, leaves a comment, then I go and take a look at their work and always leave a comment.  If I like what they are writing, I become their follower.  Any way else to do it means nothing in my mind.  Many of my so-called followers are the former kind.

I'm with you on this one, Cardisa!  smile

As an automatic follower, you are seeing the option to "unfollow". The rest of the world sees the option to "follow".

In other words, all is well. smile

I think she's talking about her feed. I think, though I can't guarantee it because I haven't looked into it, that if someone unfollows you it will only show up for you. If it showed up for anyone else it would be under your Hubtivity on your profile.

Yes, it's just giving you the option to unfollow the hub  - i.e. not get emails about comments etc.  If someone stops being your follower, it will only show up as one less, you are not notified. You are not expected to follow back every person who follows you, most people would not do that just for the sake of it.

Ok . . . thank you to all of you!! I guess what I'm looking at is what Eric is calling my 'feed'. And now the 'unfollow' is showing up next to my two forum postings so I'm getting it. Still weird that that option is there for yourself?! Or maybe I'm just missing a big part of something . . .

Anyway, I'm going to go away and calm down now . . . silly newbie me . . .   smile

That is not weird. Depending on your email settings, if you follow a discussion, you receive email notifications. If you unfollow, no more emails. Still showing up in your feed.

You are getting there....if you 'follow' a forum post or hub (which happens automatically if you post on a thread, write a hub or comment on someone else's), you will receive notification every time it is updated (someone else comments, posts on the thread etc.) If you don't want to receive all these emails, you can 'unfollow' smile

Thanks for explaining. As for those who only want a follower back, sure, let them go away. But among many anonymous followers, some may turn out to be "genuine."  I think that some of my followers read without ever commenting. But you have made some valid points.

I agree with you WE, I too have followers who don't leave comments. There are genuine followers who aren't commentors.

Cardisa: thank you for your 'welcome to HP'! I am sort of understanding that the 'unfollow' choice appears on your feed next to your 'post' whether it be a hub or question or forum post - still doesn't totally make sense to me why it would appear next to something I've initiated but suppose it will sooner or later . . . guess i got more research ahead of me.

Regarding commenting: i've already found that there are people who comment a) without really reading the hub and b) therefore leave rather inane comments - i think just to boost their commentor score. Guess commenting is encouraged to create a feel of community (?) but not really sure why it is important to have different levels of commentor because it leads to this type of commenting . . . that frankly i'd rather not have!

By default, you follow your own discussions, questions etc.. You can disable that on an item-by-item basis by un-checking the box that appears when you first post. You can also change the default settings under My Account. If you do either of these, then the "unfollow" in your feed will change to "follow" for future items.

Over time some do hit the unfollow. Then again at the same time others are clicking the follow button. I do not take it personal. I can not afford a resentment. It is a waste of time. I relate to you and easy does it on following others. People think differently try not to take it personal. When we guess at why or assume it could drive us nuts. Just keep on, you will get lots of fans. People will follow for various reasons. Some to get you to follow some because they like your content and you. Not to worry girl as long as you are OK with you   then kick the dust from the boots and keep on. Content is key. God Bless your journey at the hubs. Have fun and enjoy the ride. It will change your life. Hugs to you.
