As a Graduate Student of English Literature, I've been forced to read and write my fair share of papers, essays, articles, and novels.  If there's one thing that facilitates the reading/writing process, it has to be humor.  I try to incorporate a little in my academic writing as well as the couple of hubs I've published, and not only has the process become much more fun for me, apparently my readers/professors have come around, too.  Imagine if critical essays didn't read so pretentiously and, instead, made you chuckle while actually presenting solid analysis.  Would any of you guys support such a revolution?  I'd love to hear from a few of you who agree with the approach as well as from those who can find pitfalls in such a method of academic writing.

    Joseph

The sad truth is many students find writing papers stressful. If you are sufficiently on top of your subject to be able to incorporate humour that is great!

I can't agree more with you Charles.  Perhaps sufficient knowledge of the subject allows us to play with the subject matter in any way we prefer.

When I write papers or do assignments, I generally incorporate something funny or sarcastic into it. I do it mostly to test the TA or professor-- if they see it, usually they underline it and write a 'haha' or something. A lot of them don't though, and my genius goes to waste.

Sometimes I can't help it though- when a professor assigns busy work or a question is absolutely and completely ridiculous, I make my responses just as stupid or ridiculous.

We had to write a ten page analysis paper on a ridiculously short speech, so the assignment itself was a huge headache-- I ended up taking one sentence about societal collapse and writing ten pages on what I would do if an apocalypse happened. I got an A, so I guess it worked...

I think many professors give papers to write to know your point of view. Your take on the subject. They do not have anything to do with the subject, they just want to see how well you are able to describe yourself. Some also look for the controversial topic more so that students are able to express themselves.

Often professors would like to assume you have the knowledge. The essay or paper is for you to demonstrate you understand the material and can apply techniques and can think.
