   This is really sad. I think that it is hard for college grads to land their dream jobs, because of the lack of experience. A degree looks amazing to employers, but experience and on the job training looks better in most cases. With a combination of the two, you are set.
   Often college grads have to gain a few years of experience working in their fields in order to then achieve the better jobs.

   I'm not so sure that's true anymore, since it seems like everybody and their dog has a degree nowadays.

   Times are changing. If for the better, there will be more self-directed education. If not, more blind obedience to the system.
   Why would anyone choose the latter?
   
   My advice to the youth:
   *Know how to Teach yourself whatever you are interested in.
   *Get some experience and create your own degree.
   *Have professional people who mentor you provide references to indicate the amount of time and type experience they have provided.
   *Don't be afraid to work for free or low pay. Do this before you leave your parents' house.
   *If it means taking college classes, take the ones that will benefit you the most.
   *Stay in a position of command over what you need to learn and why you need to learn it.
   *Your horizon should be clear to you. This knowledge will take research and knowing your own interests.
   
   Parents: Facilitate your children's interests by having full regard for what their interests are. This regard requires paying attention to your child up until they are flying on their own as young adults.

   This happens to many...everywhere and if my memory serves me well, it's not really anything new.  I could spend a lot of time, listing just the individuals I know personally, who are working or have worked a job that has nothing to do with their degree.  Whether it pays less, more or equal, these jobs create a paycheck.  It's not ideal, but....often, it's short-lived.  I also know a few people who decided they really loved the work they originally took, just to keep afloat....stayed and worked their way up the ladder.  I'm one who believes even if a degree is wasted, the "education," never is....regardless
