Social Media and Hubbers

   As someone who is largely not in favor of social media for reasons I've gone so far as to write a hub about, I have a hard time working the social media angle to drive traffic.  Still, Twitter and Facebook have done well for me to the extent I would expect given that my network is extremely small.  So, yesterday, I settled in and got to work with the "Follow" button on Twitter.  I hope to get some degree of conversational interaction going on the Twitter feed sooner or later, but for the time being I'll be content to retweet things and hope others will return the favor.
   
   So, this leads to my questions.  What purpose does your social media serve?  Do you have dedicated accounts for "advertising" purposes, or do you mingle that with your personal accounts?  Has anyone else made an effort to collect a small network among other hubbers?  Is it worth it?

      None.  I have a FB account for "advertising" purposes - it never received a single comment and as the purpose was to promote discussion of my topic it has been allowed to die.
      
      I post a link on FB to any new hub, making sure to make it visible only to those that might be interested, and that's it.  More an effort to show my friends (real friends, not FB "friends") what I'm up to than to advertise it).  I am part of another FB group of hubbers that at one time pushed our hubs and it did produce traffic - for a day or two.  Which then died back to normal.  No lasting effects I could ever see, and that group has become a group of friends with an occasional discussion of HP or online writing.  Useful and nice, but not for promotion.

      Social media serves the purpose of letting people communicate with each other in various and diverse ways.  That is really all there is to it.
      
      If you don't enjoy using the platform for that purpose you are going to find it hard to use it effectively for self-promotion.

   I tried having dedicated account to promote stuff in the past, but Twitter and Facebook both seemed like they required a lot of time and effort to build up enough of a network to get any significant traffic, and I've never had the time and energy to do it. I know some people do well out of it though.
   
   The one site I like to use which is sort of a social network is Stumbleupon. Its fun to use - just let them send you to a few random interesting websites every now and them, and most links I submit get at least a handful of views. I once had a page on one of my sites go viral on Stumbleupon, and it got nearly 10,000 visits in less than a day before my server died under the pressure. Honestly, it was more like a denial of service attack than a promotion they were sending me so many visitors. That was before Pinterest took a lot of users from them, but I think they're still pretty big.

      I wonder if it would be worth an attempt to link up with other Hubbers.  Take all of our smaller efforts to create networks and intermingle them.
