What's the Key to Getting Lots of Traffic From StumbleUpon and Reddit?

   I receive practically no traffic from these bookmarking sites, and Pinterest isn't much better. Learnist however generates loads of traffic.

      Why do you care?   Stumbleupon traffic can do more harm than good, because it can cause spikes of visits with a very high bounce rate.   Similar for Reddit.  Pinterest can be good and for that you need MFP images.

         I don't think you need special 'made for Pinterest' images.  Just ordinary images do just as well and they don't even have to be original.  I have a Hub that is only four months old and it has over 900 pins so far.  On that Hub, not one image is original and only two have any kind of text on them.

            Pins do not guarantee traffic - teaser text, on the other hand, is more likely to.

               That Hub did get a lot of traffic from Pinterest and has 126,567 page views to date!

               Actually, that's not true.  Pins with the most traffic have no human faces and no text.

                  I agree that text is not necessary.  If you are showing a photo of some delicious  food or a great craft project, the implication is there that if you click on the link, you will be taken to a recipe or directions, or at least a general idea of how to make it or where to buy it. 
                  
                  I don't agree that faces aren't good.  The stats in the first link were interesting, but I think it was analyzed incorrectly.  A photo of a face won't tell you anything about what is behind it.  Is it a bio, an ad for something like makeup, or a Woman of the Year award, a commentary or opinion, or something else entirely?  I'm not enticed to click on it because I don't know if I will be rewarded for the click.  However, if there were words, like Cardisa showed, then I know what my reward is, and I am more likely to click if I'm interested in that sort of thing.
                  
                  My Pinterest traffic has exponentially increased as well after following WryLit's suggestions. Thank you! In fact, it is my number #2 traffic generator.  Google is usually #1, but  yesterday Pinterest is #1.

                  The point is, not every subject lends itself to pictures that attract attention by themselves.  If you have a subject that's not naturally "pinnable" by itself, adding text will make a huge difference.

   Pinterest shows a bunch of pictures, and even if lots of people pin a photo from your hub, there has to be something to motivate people to click on the pin and go to your hub.  Put some words on the photo that entice people to click.  If you look at my profile, you will be able to see lots of examples.
   
   I haven't had much luck with StumbleUpon and Reddit.  I think they make sure that you don't get seen very much unless you really participate on the site.

      Superficially, Learnist appears to be quite similar to Pinterest. You can add photos and links and group them into "boards". If you view content on the site by category, boards are displayed rather than individual pins as on Pinterest. Boards which tend to be popular rise to the top of the display list.
      You can also add tags for each board. I don't know however whether they influence the visibility / ranking of pages in Google searches.

   The first step to getting lots of StumbleUpon traffic is to be in the year 2005.
   
   Don't try to get reddit traffic. You can't spam a net savvy community, and honestly, the chances of something you do share there getting big for all the wrong reasons is pretty high.

   As MT pointed out, to get Pinterest traffic you have to let the viewers know what they are clicking. Place text on your images. These are called "made for Pinterest" images. The term was coined by WryLilt and I found my traffic improved tremendously when I started doing that.
