The above is true concerning private insurance companies. I have an American friend, who is only 35 years old, who is being denied the best treatment for his back surgery because his insurance deems the alternative treatment not 'cost efficient.' This is a newer operation that would allow him to still have sex comfortably--the alternative and less expensive route (which they want him to take) would involved fusing bones in his back together, which is an older treatment usually reserved for older patients.
Also, the idea that small town docs and start up drug companies are being limited, etc., etc. is the problem with the American health care situation is quaint, but nowhere near reality.
Anam if I were you I'd advise your friend to avoid that back operation that involves fusing bones. I have heard of a lot of horror stories involving back operations, a lot becoming worse. In fact not much that the medical establishment offers to people suffering with back problems seems to work. Physiotherapy made my back worse. As someone dealing with a back problem for 15 years the best advice in my opinion is to realize what he can do and what he can't do and then avoid what he can't do. Walking might help if he's recovered to that point.
His problem is serious and affects his work life--involves a lot of pain. The insurance company keeps telling him to have the fusion operation and he keeps refusing. Meanwhile, he is having no treatment, but drugs.
And yes, he wants desperately to avoid the operation. He would like to be able to have sex w/ his wife, for one.

Have you written about the NHS and private medicine option in England? Or where can people find more information?
I've done 3 hubs on the NHS, and have been intending to add one on private health care and insurance. I'd better get on with it lol.
Drug companies do research only in those fields that have potential to make huge money. They intend to earn at least $10 if not $ 100 for every buck spent.
Governments and universities, of course, sometimes (not every time) go for researches of public utilities.

I have been listening to how the government has a billion dollars for getting people to sign up for the Affordable Healthcare Act. Would that money have been better spent training more doctors and building new hospitals? New Jersey has closed how many community hospitals in the last few...

For me, U.S. House majority leader Eric Cantor made the best lie on Morning Joe (6/29/2012). Cantor said that the law takes away your healthcare policy and replaces it with one dictated by Washington. NBC’s Tom Brokaw immediately challenged that. Brokaw said that the law states that you can keep...
