How do I verify that the file is a csv file?

   I have spent the last hour searching for the answer to that question without success.  HELP!
   I have a comparison table in word that I tried to upload into my hubpage but got "File does not have the proper csv format. Verify that the file is a csv file" so I converted it into a pdf and the same alert.  How do I convert or verify that the file is csv?

      A csv file ends in the extention ".csv" so obviously a pdf is not going to work because that ends in ".pdf"
      
      csv stands for "comma separated values" and you can make a csv file using Notepad.  All you have to do is write up your table data in a format like this
      
      first heading, second heading, third heading
      1, 2, 3
      4, 5, 6
      whatever, whatever, whatever
      
      The example above is for a table with three columns and four rows.  After you have it written up, save the file as a csv.  You may need to enter it in quotes like this "mytable.csv"
      
      You can also make a table in another program and export the file as a csv.  This is really easy to do in Excel.  I think you can also do it in Word, but I don't know how and I think it takes several steps.  If you have Excel, use that instead of Word.

            Once you create an excel file save the file. Next, use the 'save as' feature in the upper left tray or in the pop-up window. You will see a queue at the bottom saying something like 'save as type.' Select the option 'comma delimited .csv' or CSV (Comma Delimited). The newly created file will duplicate the original excel file with the same page format (Spreadsheet), yet it is a different file type. If you were to send the file as an email or is opened as a word document or word pad or etc it would be by row for the information separated by commas.
            
            Date, alpha, beta, delta, sigma
            3-15-14, 1, 2, 3, 4
            3-16-14, 10, 11, 12, 13

               A million kisses.  You saved the day!  I learnt something new.  Great! I had just about rested that article.  There is a tad of a problem however: there are two tables in vertical display with each title converted as a column data, likewise the source. 
               How do I resolve that?  I cut the title and source from the table but then another problem: nowhere to paste it above each table. Hmmm
               I'll go sleep on this [horizontal display perhaps?]
