Try to get HP Whitelisted by Adblocker

    A quote from http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/80a8ce54 … 3iFoGFRnq:

'Eyeo (adblocker producer) makes money by operating a “whitelist”...  sites can join this “acceptable ads” programme if they meet criteria such as being “transparent with us about being an ad” and “do not disrupt or distort the page content we’re trying to read”.'

Might be worth a try. But they might want money.

I have a feeling that most adblockers do this - charge companies to get whitelisted.

I used to get a lot of tech related stuff bought through Amazon ads on Hubs four or five years ago. Nowadays it is pretty rare to see uptake.

I put a lot of that down to AdBlock Plus.

A few stats from PageFair who monitor the impact of ad blocking software:

Ad blocking estimated to cost publishers nearly $22 billion during 2015.
There are now 198 million active adblock users around the world.
Ad blocking grew by 41% globally in the last 12 months.
US ad blocking grew by 48% to reach 45 million active users in 12 months up to June 2015.
UK ad blocking grew by 82% to reach 12 million active users in 12 months up to June 2015.

Those are remarkable statistics.  It would be well worth the effort; if it was not prohibitively expensive.

I have seen various figures. The Financial Times reports that companies pay "30% of the additional ad revenues" they would have made were ads unblocked.

Incidentally, there are a couple of French companies suing Eyeo at the moment. They seem to think Eyeo's business model amounts to extortion, lol.

I still reckon HP should try. Get the info even if there is no way to get whitelisted.

Add to the debate. HP has a voice in web publishing.

Sorry to bore the pants off people with this (and HP staff have probably looked into it already) but I just signed up for PageFair who offer to circumvent adblocker and deliver 'acceptable ads'. I got this email:

    Hello there -

Thank you for signing up for PageFair to measure and monetize your adblock traffic.  Follow these four steps to get started in just a few minutes.

    1. Install PageFair’s Script

Copy our javascript into your website’s source code.

    2. Configure Your Ad Space

Decide where you want PageFair’s alternative ads to appear on your site and then paste our javascript tag into your website.

    3. Enable Network Ads

PageFair will register if your website’s visitor has adblocking software activated.  If so, give us permission to show Acceptable Ads, which are less intrusive and clearly labeled.  This will allow you to make some money back in advertising while also respecting your visitor’s right not to be annoyed by ads.

    4. Set Your Payout Info

Choose to get paid by either PayPal or Wire Transfer.

    Ta Da!

Sit back, relax, and let PageFair help you recoup some of that money lost from adblocking.  Running a website is hard (and expensive) work!  If you need anything, please let us know.

P.S. Check out our most recent report in which we examine the global state of adblocking across demographics.  The conclusions may surprise you!

It would be great if 'acceptable ads' could be stretched to include HP Amazon capsules.

This is why, on my websites, I use affiliate in text links or just link from an image. I'm naughty though - I use Ad Block on one of my browsers.

I am working up to emailing staff about text links. I have never used them in the past because I don't want to deprive HP of income.

The thing we need is some kind of non-intrusive but noticeable sidebar feature which says something like:

'Are you trying to buy something today?

Click here to temporarily disable Adblock on this page and get the links you need.'

    Then the Amazon capsules appear.

Of course, you would need the technology to disable adblocking for a moment. That might or might not be possible at present, but it is the sort of feature that Eyeo would find hard to stop happening. In fact they should help it happen if they are in anyway serious about serving the reader.
