There isn't a real need to choose a niche subject on HubPages.  If you are "educated, experienced or an expert in the subject matter", then I would always recommend starting your own blog or website on your specialist subject rather than write on HubPages.  It may take longer to start earning in income from it, but in the long run it will be far more successful.

HubPages is ideal if you like to write about a variety of different subjects.   As the new system matures, I'm hoping Hubbers will be able to write for any of the niche sites from a single account, enabling us to get the benefit of "niche" writing without having to specialise in a single subject.

You may have read that having a "niche" is necessary to get traffic because Google favours specialist sites. Yes it does - and that's why HubPages is breaking up the main HP site and moving everything to specialist niche sites - BUT your HubPages account is not a site.  Although you have a profile page where you see all your articles together, Google doesn't see that.  As far as they're concerned, when you write an article it just goes into the massive anonymous pile of articles that makes up HubPages as a whole.

Ok, well I asked because I usually write about topics which are not commercial or popular. I am no expert at writing either. I had hoped maby someone would have more experience than me and be able to explain the process. I am infrequently posting, mostly community topics or non profit.
It seems hard to start my own blog, which I have no idea how people earn money by doing it on their own. When I read the emails about the new niche sites it seemed like the first few were topics I have no idea about writing on. Just trying to get new id as.
      Thanks for responding..

Choose subjects which you are either an expert in or are passionate about.  It  might be about dogs, cats, crafts or something obscure which no-one else knows anything about - thereby creating your own niche.  I often think that you get wonderful ideas for writing from just listening to a talk show on the radio.  If they are talking about it, it is definitely current and worth talking about.

I keep it simple... I just post new stuff when I feel like posting new stuff. (shrugs)
