After using a Nuke-em disc on my Windows XP and reinstalling the Windows XP operating system, I ....
discovered that I no longer had sound files. How can I fix this?
It just means that the drivers for the sound card in your computer did not get installed. If you have a built-in sound card, the drivers for it will be in the motherboard disc that came along with your computer when you bought it. If it is an add-on sound card, it would come with it's own drivers too.
If you do not have these discs, visit the manufacturers website (eg. HP, Dell etc.) and type in the model number of your computer and you will be be able to find the correct driver for your sound card and install it. If you need any more help with this, feel free to let me know. Good Luck!
This is a common problem. I cannot offer better advice than TechNation has already given. Find the drivers on disk (ideal) or seek them out on the internet (plan B).
For future reference you should look at some utilities such as DriverMagician PRIOR to any reinstalls. These tools allow you to backup all current drivers onto a CD or floppy disk or even a ZIP file which you can email to yourself on free Google or Yahoo email.
Once you are done and find you cannot locate a driver, DriverMagician or other similar program - there are many - can make throwing that one missing driver like your sound driver back onto your machine to avoid having to seek out the CD or manufacturers web site. This is the drudge work of PC maintenance - trust me nearly everyone who has done a few PC reinstalls has been there and feels the same way about it as you and me.
Thank you TechNation and informativez for your helpful advice. Indeed the sound driver was gone. I actually purchased a cd from someone on ebay with all the drivers on it. I understand that they can be downloaded for free but we couldn't go online without it. I have a new problem on my computer that I will ask for help with. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question.
You have to install the sound drivers back. Insert your Drivers and Utility CD or Motherboard CD after that install the Sound Drivers.
