There seems to be a special relationship between the US and UK governments, but given that, on both sides of the ocean, many people do not feel remotely represented by their own government, I would say, at least from the British perspective, that most British people do not see any special relationship.
On the contrary, I think most British people see Americans as belonging to a very, very different culture from their own.
Thank you for your response. I would like to say that I have a great fondness for the USA. Many of my Irish relatives went to the USA in the 19th and 20th century and thrived.
However, I do believe that Uk citizens don't realise that we are not and never have been a nuclear power. The USA controls everything in the UK.
Since the 2nd ww the UK has allowed USA nuclear bases in the UK.The USA contols the button in the UK. Germany and Japan's economies grew because they weren't allowed to spend money on instuments of war. The Uk's economy would be in better shape if we had done the same.
Our intelligence gathering in GCHQ is overseen by the USA.We give in to the USA government in everything. Iraq etc.
When we set up a domestic nuclear facility for energy the plutoniam for nuclear weapons was sent off to the USA>
'special relationship' is a subjective term, but I am aware of what you mean and my answer would be no there is not. While they may be allies, my justification is that since 9/11, the U.S. has tended to move away from 'insider' or 'special' relations with other countries. Now more than ever, global politics is an every-state-for-himself game.
A good example is border security. Canada used to be considered in a 'special relationship' with the U.S., but more and more the Americans are saying, "Sorry Canada, but if we treat our Mexican border a certain way, then that becomes our policy and you will be treated in a similar manner." It might make no sense, since we tend to move more products than people, and it might even hurt trade relations....but this is the reality of Congress.

The incompetent, immature, not-quite-adult one term president Obama was taken to the woodshed by Mr. Netanyahu. I loved it. Our bully in chief could not bully the adult in the room. Mr. Obama came off looking like an anti-Semite. And Mr. Netanyahu clearly appeared to be the only statesman in the...

I am surprised I missed this. Are you Brits really okay with all those public-monitoring cameras, (I think I have heard one of your districts is the most monitored in the Free World), using facial-recognition software to identify you as you walk and shop on the streets? What about you other folks,...
