    I'd personally recommend a few that I understand to be fairly recent:
    ZOMBIES!!! - A game where the board changes every time you play, up to size players, plenty of expansion packs. Objective is to kill a fixed amount of zombies, or reach the helipad before your opponents. Fantastic competitive game.

    Ticket To Ride - A game where you build rail lines to complete routes for points. Can be bought in many different maps. Can also get fairly competitive when your opponents cut you off and prevent you from reaching your destination.

    Settlers of Catan - A game where you must strategically place settlements/cities to collect the most points.
