I think donuts used to have no holes. but the center of the donuts may sometimes left uncook. so they made a hole to make it easier.
If I'm not mistaken, they were designed that way (with the hole) so you could grip them easier and dip them into your coffee better.
How can I refuse such a calorie-laden request? Workin' on it, froggie, dear.
