From anywhere around me.......... from life experiences, sign boards, TV shows, ads, songs, hub pages, other peoples experiences, talking with friends, walking with friends, family, siblings and loved ones but the list goes on and on and on.........
I think the best hubs are ones from your heart that you can really put yourself into. I could maybe put half nude women on one and get more hits but I am not here for pay but just to have my say. I didn't give my real name or address and I can just bla bla bla all the way home..and it feels great.
There is a story in everything in and around you in life. The skill when it comes to using that situation to help provide you with ideas is: Open your eyes and your mind... to see why others can't see the forest for the trees and then report upon it.
Sounds cheesy, but the book I'm writing now came from a dream I had. The dream itself is no longer a part of the story, but it started to get me rolling on something and it happened to really progress. It's just about finished and I'm quite happy as to how it turned out . Keep a pen and notebook by your bed, when you wake up in the morning write down the first thing you think of. Hey, you never know!
I tend to believe I suffer from ADD as a writer. I have story lines and ideas constantly come into my head . I have several works in place , I have recently made myself focus on one thought at a time and work til i get stumped or stalled before i pick up another. I tend to even get woke up in my dreams regularly. I jot down notes that make as much sense as possiable til i can get back to it later . And the thing that amazes me is there isn't just one type of genre or thought .
I am not a fan of Sci-Fi , a few months back i got a storyline in my head for a sci - fi book ? I also keep journals. alot of them .
Good question Ken. And it seems like there are a lot of good answers already.
I find that ideas come to me from what I see, hear and experience in life as most of the answers already have said.
One of my favourite stories came out of something my son did when he was 3 years old. He started wiping off our good night kisses and it was a fun little game. It sparked a great story.
One other avenue for me is jokes. I like to take jokes that have a bit of a story to them and expand on them. Build in some back story and add a bit of drama. I've written several stories for my kids this way (and I plan on building a web site to publish them on soon 8
Much of it just comes jogging through my mind and I grab on to it. Sometimes, like a songwriter, it's just a word or a catch phrase that sets off a idea in my mind. In other instances, ideas come from areas that I enjoy like the old west and adventure. I also enjoy trying to interject myself into the dark mind of a murderer, a drunk, or warped individual and then attempt to put their mind ramblings on to paper. I find that entertaining the mind is as much a part of writing as the writing of the story. WB

I will admit that when it comes down to thinking up ideas; it happens most when I am driving in my car or just before dozing off. But when I need to complete two novels that I have been working on—my well seems to be running dry. I don’t know if it’s my focus is only short term or I’ve got too...

When you write a story, do you have the end in mind, or does it just come to you as you write? Is the average higher or lower that you already have the ending in mind when you start a story?

Personally when i write i use a little of both things i have been through in the past as well as thoughts that pass through my mind. I find that this makes for an interesting and intense novel for readers; However lately i've been hearing that the key to a fantastic novel is only writing about the...
