Bipolar is when a person is manic (elated) and then depressed. this can happen over a matter of hours, days, even months. people can also be both at once.
the primary way to treat it is though medication. there are herbs that claim to treat bipolar and depression but not to the extent of actual medication.
i dont know if this answers your question but if you have any specific questions id be willing to help you out
as for the guy above, i am bipolar and i am very open about it. it doesnt shame me and i dont use it as an excuse. i still get things done. a lot of times, people just want to know what is wrong with them if anything is wrong. i was that way and when i found out it was bipolar i was extremely relieved. i am not a fan of what you had to say but everyone has their right to speech.

I wrote a poem about what it's like to be Bipolar. To me it's like having too many people in your head, sometimes all talking at once.

Granted I can name a handful of people that do use it as an excuse for ridiculous behavior, but that's them. They use the excuse because they aren't willing to own up to their own actions. It is up to each individual whether they are willing to work through it or not.

If it helps, here's the link to my poem.... http://hubpages.com/hub/Bi-Polarized

By advise to one who is not a professional mental health provider would be, "The only criteria for you would be the consultation of a mental health provider." Mental health criteria that help one to diagnose a mental health disorder can be difficult use and to understand, especially for non-mental health providers. My approach to helping people with mental health issues, when they would come to me for help in my medical practice was to refer them to experts in mental health care. Without exception, my people were able to get the correct diagnosis, treatment and other care.
    Regards,
    Dr. Haddox
