From the parents point of view, it would be conveniant to be bring them up as vegetarians also with the awareness of meat, until they get to a age where they would like to decide for themselves with regards to this

Alternatively, bringing them up a vegetarians may make they reluctant to eat meat.

Personaly, I have seen a friend whose famiy brought him up in the first context (above) and then he decided at around 12 years old what he wanted to do. He liked both meat and vegetarian meals, but respected his parents opinions and would mostly eat appropriate meals with them and then when out with his mates or other family members would eat meat meals.

    Hope this helps?

If in a family of non-vegetarians when everyone else except me takes NV, then it is extremely difficult for me to force my children to take up vegetarianism.

Kids need a lot more attention to appropriate vitamins/minerals than us full-grown folk. If parents are really conscious of the vegetarian diet to be sure it will be very healthy for the kiddos, then it shouldn't be a problem (veganism is a different story - we need some animal protein, especially when we are growing up).

The best idea is to consult with a vegetarian-friendly (but not a vegetarian-only) nutritionist. S/he can help families plan diets that will work for everyone.

If eggs are fall into the category of veg. then i feel that the child would have all the proteins he needs to grow up as a healthy adult, and its perfectly alright. And as far as i know, a child would rarely digest red meat.
