Why is it that money seems to be the only answer to our educational problems in America?
Forever it seems Americans have thrown billions and billions of dollars at the education process with little satisfaction. When will the madness stop and sanity return?
According to Michelle Rhee, the answer is in getting rid of the 6 to 10% of the poorest performing teachers and replace them with average teachers. That means abolishing tenure (right now apparently teachers have tenure after 2 years).
Well the problem is really the state and local governments that are supposed to be paying to support community colleges and state schools, but they have messed up so higher education is taking a strain. It's ridiculous that in a time of recession, when community colleges and state schools are getting more students, they have to raise tuition because the state and local governments can't fund them.
Here are a couple plugs for community colleges:

Will I think the problem is that it's a breach of government. Obviously, the federal government has over-extended their hand in public education. In the 70's the government began to implement more federal control over the schools and as a result schools have become beacons of federal power. Let the teachers and principles and school boards set the curriculum and let them do it themselves. There's no need for government intervention in every single part of our lives. the government gives states' funds to build roads, but there not telling them where, when and how to build them. I believe the same concept applies here too.
I agree with you but the regulatory control is so far beyond us ever regaining local control of education that we would be dreaming. Education is power over youth and their developing minds...a high priority with socialist and communists. It is also a high priority in their agenda. Thus far in America they own the education system and and a goodly portion of the media. Newspapers are struggling to survive yet the local editor here in my market came out last week and openly endorse Obama...the subscription cancellations are coming in like wild fire. What does that tell you about where this editor's mind is as a business man. A good journalist and businessman would keep his mouth shut, report both sides objectively, and hope they hell that it sold newspapers and adverstising in the process. Why would you put yourself in the Obama Box in a predominately conservative market? ~WB

With the entertainment and sport industries making multimillions of dollars each year and the education industry losing funding and shutting down programs and laying off teachers, should the education of our children be privatized? City budgets are no longer able to provide adequate funding for...

It didn't really surprised me why the U.S. was not even in the Top 10 for the best educational system in the world according to the most recent survey. There's a real problem in the system of education in the U.S. and it's a shame that those politicians in Washington are not doing much to rectify...

Will the U.S. ever be tops in math and science?Having lived in Southeast Asia I've seen how non-American youth essentially enter the world being prepped for college; and from a very young age they learn and study intensely, even controversially. But it seems to pay off for them, often right here in...

What would you do to fix the educational system in America? This assumes, of course, that the system needs fixing. What would you change about it? What would you terminate? Perhaps we need to look first at what is wrong before answering the question.
