I too think a great book should make me all emotional.  I really like books that get me into a character's head, even if I dislike the character.  Occasionally I enjoy books that take me out of my comfort zone and expose me to new realities.

it is very difficult to answer to such a question. as like apparel food and art and such other things the "greatness" may vary from one person to other. but as a general rule we can assume that the book or any work can be said to be a great one if it pleases the connoisseur and the common people over a period of time.but  as far my definition of great book is that one which i can go back to it repeatedly even after i have read it. the book which inspires and gives the pent up emotions of mine a free space to vent in my mind is a great book.

    One that serves a purpose....
shares information that will help better people leading them in the way of wisdom, helps them do their life's work, and gives their brain an opportunity to engage in play (laugh and relax). If I can get smarter, immediately utilize the info in practical ways, and lengthen my life with a good laugh then I'd say the author has a gift!

A good book is one that after I read it, I want to live with it.  I keep it, I fondly remember it, and if it is a paperback, I will search until I find it in hardcover.  It moves my soul and comes alive.  An example is The Good Earth.  It is an old title that has been around for years.  As a child it was on the family bookshelf with a jacket.  I would look at the picture on the jacket and wonder what the story was about.  I was too young then to read it, but always remembered the jacket.  In my 60s I found the book in paperback and purchased it.  As I was drawn into another world, I wondered why I hadn't read it much sooner.  I was determined to find the hard cover version, and when I did, I placed in among my other books to be cherished.  Some authors create books that live forever.
