Fighting Pit Bulls May Get a Chance

   About 45 minutes from where I live, 29 pit bulls were seized from a potential dog fighting ring. One or two of the dogs appear to have recently been in a fight. The dogs ranged in age from pups to adult dogs.
   
   The man has been charged with dog fighting and cruelty to animals. He sits in jail.
   
   As for the dogs, Joan Sammond, the executive director for the SPCA said that the scene reminded her of Michael Vick's case. Sammond received three of Vick's dogs. One of which was initially un-adoptable, but has sense turned out to be one of the most wonderful pets.
   
   
   
   The dogs were given water provided solely from rain. There was no fresh food in site. The dogs lived on 3 foot chains with metal stakes in the ground. Some didn't have shelter, living strictly on dirt.
   
   All 29 pit bulls were being transported to Atlanta for rescue.
   
   The neighbors were all surprised, as although they've always heard dogs barking from all directions, but never thought it was caused by dog fighting.

   But, if Michael Vick has done one thing right by his dog fighting case, it was to raise awareness in the public to report potential dog fighting rings.
   
   Also, because most of Vick's dogs were successfully rehabilitated and re-homed with children and other pets (cats and dogs), the possibility that dog fighting rings will turn out with more rehabilitation.
   
   What is said is that this is the second case in my town. The other my vet told me about this morning, and it was actually about 5 minutes from where I live. About 29 dogs in a neighborhood and no one noticed they were a part of a fighting ring. My vet believes the whole street was in on it since no one turned anyone it. But, on top of that, I never really heard about this case on the news or in the paper, so I'm not sure if these dogs were given a second chance. I doubt it. *shrugs*
   
   The first case mentioned was not noticed sooner because it was out in the boonies. Neighbors aren't necessarily right next door.

   Poor pit bulls. Why do stupid humans think that they can use animals like that? I hope those pit bulls find GOOD homes with NICE families who won't treat them like they are inferior when they aren't! and I hope those who started the fighting get their butts whooped hard with a lot of jail time. Then someone on the inside can use them for fights and see how they like it!

   It's always sad to hear of such crulety. I hope that at least some of these dogs are givven a second chance.

   E.E. my mom said she heard on the news, they're working with the dogs and feel that most will be able to be re-homed. The trainers have decided that those that cannot be re-homed right away (IE those who are more aggressive toward other animals and those who just need more socialization with people) will be kept by the trainers.

   I agree. I think that Vick's case started the rehabing of fighting dogs. That's one good thing he did. Even though it came from a bad situation, it has had a good ending, so far.
