   Reading books as a hobby, does it still exist?
   
   I see the empty book shops. Libraries have become a place where people can sleep peacefully.
   
   When I talk about books with friends they are clueless.Some say they don't have time to do. Some say it is for people who are jobless.
   
   I'm just wondering whether this habit of reading has just gone with the wind.

   I love books. I love reading. However, as a busy mom I hardly find time to read them. Instead, I read to my children and occasionally steal some time to read what I am interested in.

   I love to read. As a stay at home mum to a 17mnth old girl my time is limited but once she goes to bed each evening I love to curl up on the sofa or snuggle up in bed and read a book.
   I think this comes from my mum being such an avid reader; our love of books was encouraged from an early age and it is something I already do with our little girl in the hope that she too will enjoy to read as much as I do.

   I read all the time, and yes I do have a job and children. This is how I escape from the real world! What would I do without books?

   I also LOVE to read!! 
   Most of the time in the evening I'll sit down with a book and maybe have a tea with it....and time flies when you're reading a good book, hours can go by....
   
   And you don't have to be jobless to read...lol...

   Young people who "can read but don't"... should think that over.  Reading helps a persons life in many ways.  Watching TV or videogames is mostly non-productive.
   
   I have MANY books on various subjects.  I read lots of books. My favorite books are OLD ones about 100 years old. I look at books this way:  A man lived his life and learned some skills or knowledge.  He spent YEARS learning it and then wrote a book about it.  If i try to learn ON MY OWN... it might take me years and years of work -- just like he had to do.   But if I read his book... Then I can learn those things in only a couple HOURS!  Why would anyone want to learn everything the HARD WAY when reading is the EASY WAY? 
   
   Here is a good example you should show your non-reading friends.  Right after the American civil war, the southern states were very impoverished.  They had lost a WAR... and the cotton crops were failing because of the cotton-weevil. And the slaves were poorest of all, having been freed from slavery. Now the black men had to earn their own way in the world.  There was ONE BLACK MAN who single-handedly brought the south out of poverty!  His name was George Washington Carver.  This man was a HERO that everyone should read about to know what he did and how he lived his life.  I encourage you to read up on this person. Maybe it will encourage your friends to re-consider reading.

    I don't think I've got any authority to talk about it on a grand scale, but I often see people reading. On planes, trains, buses, people are dipping into novels all the time, it seems. Don't lose hope! Maybe you're observing an area where it's not as common? Some of the bookshops I've seen in cities are packed to bursting!

    Yes of course it still exists. I read a lot when i am not working and there are so many stuffs you discover when you read.

    I've read 32 books on my Kindle in the last month.
    
    I read four paperback books.
    
    And listened to one audio book.  I also have a regular job and a side business. Plus, I write.
    
    I just read really, really fast.

    Yes, this habit still exist. I make time for reading even if its only 10 minutes to a half hour. I look forward to my one day a week away from my significant other just so I can lay around in bed reading. I love it and its fantastic habit/hobby.

    I love to read, I read every chance I get. I am sad that my favorite bookstore is out of business now, I don't care much for Barnes and Nobel so I guess I will either make the drive to Book a Million or stick with buying on Amazon. Everyone keeps telling me that I am going to have to break down and buy a kindle but I just don't think I can do it. I love to hold a book in my hand, I love the smell of a brand new book. I am just weird I guess LOL!

    I think the general population reads short info.  I have so many people who tell me they don't enjoy it, they don't have time, etc.
    
    I use to read roughly 3 books a week.  I now have 2 great children - one who is active in a couple of groups and the other has special needs and has many appointments.  I now read many more magazines than books and only read 3-4 books a month now.

    I think if you asked this question on YouTube, you'd get a very different answer. Of course, many people still love to read - even read books - as a way of life, as a way of learning, or as a hobby. But it is fewer and fewer. I've heard that 95% of books (other than fiction) are bought by only 5% of the people in the US, and I bet that's true. Reading is going out of fashion, for sure. Both literacy, and using literacy to enjoy life or improve ourselves, is a rare thing these days. Some people have truly switched to reading on electronic devices or computers, so reading of books is dropping even faster than reading in general. I just learned that most retiring baby boomers are looking to the Internet for health tips, not to books. That's a big change.
    
    So, as individuals, we hubbers read a lot - but we're all writers, too! As a society in general, we are less literate, we are reading less, and we read fewer printed books.

    Books are forever, as I hope libraries will remain, also! A computer is just a new technological tool; it isn't everything!
