With so many people in interrational relationships, why are people so racist still? Why is it such a big deal to have a black president?

Racism is a function of inbred fear and ignorance. We have a portion of society which does not gain in its knowledge or awareness from one generation to the next.  It simply passes on the poisons and phobias learned in past experiences. Ignorance is difficult to breed out of society and requires many generational layers to achieve true progress.  In order to eradicate ignorance, we first have to confront it with some kind of awareness exercise that causes people to stop and say, "gee, I must be ignorant".  That's not likely to happen since most of these folks are far to ignorant to reach any such conclusion about themselves as the result of an exercise.  Therein lies the fundamental problem and it exists on both sides of the aisle...ignorance. It drives white people to embrace racism and it drives anger in many minorities to lash at such behavior. Until we can dispense with the ignorance, we will never be able to overcome it.  For all the money spent on education in America, it is such a shame to say that we still have a significant portion of the population which remains ignorant. You are correct in everyway. I came from a country that did not have much, and when I try my best. I notice that most people here that have all this to take advantage of, don't work hard to have anything.

There is a small percentage of that generation left that holds to racist thinking, and of course they still pass that down to their families--hopefully families can overcome that.

I haven't heard anyone in the news or any of the pundits make a big deal out of having a black president.  I do not think it is his color that causes concern but his lack of experience which would be true regardless of his race.

I honestly don't think that people are trying to carry rifles into a speech to shoot at our President, because he isn't experienced. I also don't think that they are making derogative statements about his children because he is inexperienced, either.
Think about it. Was Bush experienced? Being a barely "c" student didn't help much either. He got into office, based on who his family was and who he is. He had no experience and while President Obama has changed the south side of Chicago into a working community, doing more than Bush has ever done, in respects to reaching out to other countries, they still blame him! Why? Because he is the first president of color.
