Have any of you experienced an earthquake?

I felt a tremor just now, my water bottle was moving around in a weird manner. I suspected that an earthquake had rocked Indonesia and true enough, Sumatra was hit by two earthquakes today, a 5.5 magnitude & 5.6 magnitude. Please share your experiences when an earthquake happened.

Hi there Reena and welcome to Hubpages! I have not ever experienced an earthquake as I am in the UK but we do get tremors every few years. Nevertheless, these are too small to feel. However, one occured on the 28th Feb 2008 and was strong enough to notice households equipments rock such as the one you felt. The magnitude was 5.3 if I am right. It would be a similiar reading for yours. Unfortunately, I was asleep when the tremor of feb 2008 had happened and had missed it! I always wanted to feel an earthquake but obviously not the larger ones. Stay safe and be careful wherever you are smile xxx

I live close to the fault line and in a heavy seismic zone thus we experience earthquakes often. The last time I felt it it was as if my bed was being moved by a wild animal running under my mattress. It was scary and if I remember some of our knick knacks moved on the table. One picture fell.

Yes, I have an experience. It was a quiet evening. I was in my room and then my bed moved a little bit and moved for the second time. I was excited because that was not a bent of earthquake. It was 4.7 magnitude.

Since the 7.1 earthquake here in NZ September 2010 we have had literally several thousands of aftershocks here in Christchurch to this day because a complex series of fault lines that no one knew about became evident to us here in Christchurch. I have written a hub about these. There have since been some very large quakes, most notably the 6.3 February quake in 2011 that killed 182 people in my city. Two buildings collapsed killing so many people.

Now I as I write this we are are still getting them, almost between 1 and 4 a day and when we don't feel any they seem to wind up in to bigger ones later like 5's or 6 pointers which do so much damage. People here are so fed up with them, many have left, peoples homes on the east-side of the city are destroyed. We seem to get a 6 point quake every four months. Geologist think we are still  in store for another big one and we may still get quakes 30 years on.

Very depressing but we have learned to live with these things now for 2 years virtually, night after night. Houses need checking all the time for structural damage and when we get big ones we lose power and have to shovel tons of silt of the street because of liquefaction. Every time we go to the mall or supermarket we feel we take our own life in our hands, but what else can we do. I fear for my children. After we get a big one everyone races to pick up their kids from school, through grid-locked streets with cracked and open roads. Very stressful
