   What are good business ideas for college students?
   
   i really want to start my own business so I can already generate my own income. I am taking up a business course, and I still have 2 years before graduation. and I really really really want to experience business already. well, we have a school supplies business. but I want to have my own, independent from my parents' business. I can't apply for a job because my parents won't let me. please help!

   web based is def. the easiest route because it requires little money to start up. You might consider a text book sell back site that allows students to list their text books online and sell directly to other students, which deletes the middle man (the site can take a small percentage, work on donations or solely through ad revenue), a web site that lists the best bar specials in town, a website that goes to bars and takes pictures then sells them online.  Those are ones I have seen and tend to stay local, so you could use the ideas any where.    As with just about any age, life situation, etc., the only limit is in your own creativity. It might help to start by listing the skills that you have. They don't have to be something that you think related to business, just anything -- I know people who have built businesses around things like really liking beer (he has now reviewed nearly 5,000 different beers), or being great at creating humorous stick figures. Next, start getting out into either the online or the offline world and interact with people who fall within a market you'd like to serve. I started my current business when I was a junior in high school, and still love every minute of it. The internet offers an excellent way to find unfulfilled needs in your market, as well as infinite ways to build your business.

   I can't tell you what you should do. But if it were me, I would work for my parents' business instead of starting a school supplies business of my own that would directly compete with my parents. Struggling to increase margins and compete with others in this economy is a knife fight and competitors hate each other. Survival as a new business literally means taking market share from someone else. If I were still a college student with the money to start a business (that did not compete with my parent's business) I might write up a business plan after lots and lots of market research. I would probably still want to spend some time in corporate sales first to gain some experience. But everybody is different and you may already be equipped to succeed.

   If you want to start a business on a shoe string then I would suggest starting an ironing service. I did this when I was low on funds. You start with a few notices and then word of mouth takes over. You will be amazed at  who your clients are. If you want to have a look, I have done a page over at Squidoo about it. You can make a tidy sum every week. Plus it is putting you in contact with people you may never have met.
   
   
   Just because you start one business doesn't mean you aren't keeping your eyes and ears open. It will keep cash flowing in while you search for a niche.
   
   I will say this, in the financial climate, this is the perfect opportunity to start your own business. With less and less companies hiring you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
