Why are so many people afraid of the dark?

What made you afraid of the dark as a child?

People are not actually afraid of the dark.  They are afraid of the unknown.  When it is dark they can not tell what is making those noises or if there are no noises they might think somebody or something is sneaking up on them and they will never see it coming.  The fear of the dark is usually in combination with a pretty good imagination.  The same can be applied to the future as well.  A lot of people are afraid of the future because it is 'dark' and unknown.  It all depends on the person and exactly what they are thinking of when the lights go out!

It is ingrained in our collective conscious as a remnant of human evolution. We used to have to be more alert in the dark to avoid predators. We are not nocturnal and our sleep cycles have adjusted to the day/night cycle in the same way that female menstraul cycles have adapted to the lunar cycles. Also why more babies are born during the more hospitable seasons. Other evolutionary leftovers are responsible for why many people are inherently afraid of snakes and spiders even if they have never seen one before and don't know if they are dangerous.

That is exactly what made me afraid of the dark as a child. Well, that and the fact that my dad used to hide behind doors and scare me when I was a kid.

I love the dark. In fact I really don't like bright lights. I have an uncanny ability to move about in the dark without running into things or falling over items.
I love nothing more than to lay on the open ground at night and spend hours looking up at the stars.
There is nothing in the dark that isn't there in the light.
I see it as an irrational fear.
