    The Supermassive Black Hole at the centre of the Milky Way.

    What I want to know is, is the Supermassive Black Hole at the centre of the Milky Way gradually sucking in all of the Stars and the Planets of our Galaxy. Its been puzzling me for years.

    The simple answer is no, the forces counter to ensure this doesn't happen, the black hole will consume, gas, stars, stellar materials such as dust, which get close enough, but it's more like a venus fly trap than a vacuum cleaner. There is a good article on the hubble site.

    Thanks for enlightening me, that makes a lot more sense. Fascinating to think, that even if the sun became a black hole, we wouldn't get sucked in. But of course, everything would die anyway, because we need the sun.

    In a sense, the answer is yes. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is gravitationally sucking in everything around it, just as the Sun is sucking in the Earth and the Earth is sucking in the moon. That's why they all remain in orbit - their velocity is balanced with the force of gravity sucking them in.

    In a more accurate sense, the answer is no. Black holes aren't so much a cosmic vacuum cleaner but a place where spacetime is so warped that the laws of physics break down.

    It is a huge vacum cleaner for dust particles. Without it, you could not see in space at all. It would be far to dusty to actually see. Hope that helps.
