What kind of support is available for people that love active alcoholics and/or addicts?
Al-Anon is an anonymous support group for the loved ones of alcoholics. They are all over North America, if you live there.

Best of luck!
Al-Anon is awesome! It teaches us the three C's: we didn't cause it, we can't cure it, and we can't control it.
There are hundreds of meetings every day, all over the world. It's basically free (they pass a basket but you are not obligated), people don't interrupt each other, and it's anonymous.
Good for you for looking for support.
I am sure you have heard the term ACOA - Adult Children of Alcoholics, that describes my upbringing. Sometimes those who were lucky enough to not be raised by alcoholics have no idea what pain the abusive behaviors create. I made a choice to not be an alcoholic or accept that from any man based upon the pain I experienced as a child. This dilemma creates Co-Dependency if not addressed and people who love and accept these shortcomings in others are active enablers. Therefore, Narcotic Anonymous and Alcohol Anonymous classes along with Co-Dependency classes help rid you of the feelings and thoughts that you might experience that tell you to accept these behaviors in others. You are NOT able to fix anyone's actions, but your own. I hope you find your peace!
alanon. It helps people who love addicts to whatever. Its free and they have meetings just like the addicts do. My best advice is to just get out if you can until that person realizes he/she needs you more than the addiction. Most of us, including myself, just become enablers because we love them so much.
There is alanon. I had joined a group a very long time ago. It was more geared toward parents of addicts though. But, in all honesty - I think it would have helped if the fit were better. But for alcoholics - the best one that is well known is alanon.
Just as everyone here says, I've heard only good things about Al-Anon. If you know someone who might be self-conscious about going to a regular group, many churches offer programs based off the same concept and using the same philosophy. I know many people who have attended either AA or Al-Anon, and they feel it transformed their lives.

Every one of the first three members of Alcoholics Anonymous had received Christian upbringing. Each had studied the Bible. Each believed in God. How do you view alcoholics and drug addicts?People who are addicted to any substance, in your opinion -- are they truly sick and suffering? Do they lack willpower? Are they consciously and sanely making a destructive choice? Are they deserving of empathy, or disgust, scorn, derision, etc.? I'd love...
