What is your favorite period film?

I'm a huge fan of period films, no matter what error, and am interested in hearing the favorites of others.

My, oh, my....there's so many great period movies out there it's hard to just pick one. It's a toss up between The Godfather and Wuthering Heights 1992 version

I have real soft spot for the 1945 English film Brief Encounter. The accents are amazing and for me the incredibly sad ending for the female lead (Celia Johnson) is just heart breaking!

There was a great period film made near my home in the 70s called Somewhere In Time starring Christopher Reeve. It came out in 1980 and was (and is) huge where I live in Michigan.  Here is a description of the movie:
A playwright becomes obsessed with an old portrait of a famous actress, and as he researches her life he becomes increasingly fascinated with the real woman. He uses self-hypnosis to send himself back to 1912 and meet her in person, and they soon fall in love - a situation complicated by her jealous manager. Romantic fantasy, starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer.

I am now loving a new TV series on channel PBS called Downtown Abbey. It's not a movie but when I first started watching it, I watched for 4 hours straight and because there are no commercials it was hard to tear myself away for bathroom breaks!  If you enjoy historical dramas you HAVE to see this.  It follows the lives of an influential family and it's hired help and how they intertwine around WW1 and life in the early 1900s England.  Fascinating!

My favorite period films included Troy (2004) and Gone with the Wind (1939). Troy is an entertaining film with a huge ensemble star cast, the right balance of action, drama, romance and all.  Gone with the wind is an enthralling classic film which continues to enchant viewers with its romantic story set amidst the American Civil war.  Other period films I also enjoyed are Ben-hur (1959) for its magnificent revenge-drama story and Braveheart(1995) for its good direction,  deep patriotism displayed by William Wallace portrayed well by Mel Gibson and the immaculate way the film was set in 16th century Scotland.
