Does race really matter so much when it comes to casting for characters in movies based on books?

I actually paid attention while reading so I knew Rue was supposed to be black and wasn't surprised with the casting or disappointed. She was perfect for that role and it was heartbreaking when she died. I just can't understand that sort of feedback after seeing the movie. Does race matter that much when it comes to the film adaptation?

If the author made a point to say that the character's race is vital to the story, it is important. Many people were quite angry that the lead actress from Memoirs of a Geisha is Chinese, when the story takes place in Japan. Johnny Depp is slated to play Tonto in the new Lone Ranger movie but he is not a native american actor. I would prefer if an actor like Wes Studi played Tonto, an amazing native american actor from Oklahoma who has stunned in movies like Dances with Wolves and Last of the Mohicans. So yes, I think it matters! Especially when there is an amazing actor who could play the part in favor of a more famous choice.

I wrote on this last night. Your right, it states it on pages 45 and 98. It was heartbreaking when she died, she is a human, race shouldn't matter. All of these people who "read the book" and didn't know, did not pay well enough attention to the book. It is so stupid that they act like that. I don't think race should matter. If you like a character, like a character , don't base anything on race or anything else. I have not seen the movie, but I will soon. I am taking my girlfriend for her birthday to see it.

You cant cast Tom Hanks as the Last Black Man on Earth... but if daddy is a famous actor, expect to get put in a movie.

A lot of people believe that race doesn't matter, both in real life and in films and works of art. But the circulation of racist posts going around twitter, especially those centered around Rue, in regards to the Hunger Game is shocking for a person who believed our country, and especially the youth of our country, had moved passed racism. To say that Rue's death in the book and in the film was less meaningful or sad because of the color of her skin was appalling. Perhaps, what shocked them the most may not be that Rue was portrayed by an African American girl but rather that she was so far away from what they had imagined.
Frankly, I don't think many of the people who posted those tweets even read the book. They probably heard about it from a friend or read the wikipedia and developed an idea that was not based on the books themselves.

So to give a straight answer to your question, for the most part, I do not think race matter's in film adaption. However, film makers should attempt to cast actors that match the books description of the characters.

Yes, it has to be plausible for the viewer to enjoy the context of the story. I saw a play where they had all different races playing the father, son, daughter, mother and it took a little time for me to get passed the fact tat the casting director didn't take on the assignment seriously. Unless the book characters are of multiple races, I think the casting director is being paid to make the film plausible.
