Any advice for preparing a first child for the arrival of a second?
Well my daughter is only 3 years old and she is super excited to be the BIG sister. I told her the day i found out i was pregnant that there was a baby in mommy's tummy and she lit up. She keeps trying to see the baby. i took her with me to my doctor appointment so she could hear the baby's heartbeat. Just take it day by day and keep a positive attitude about the new baby's arrival. as long as the first child keeps thinking it is a good and happy thing all will be fine. but expect the first child to be extremely clingy. try including the new baby in any conversations you have with your first child. especially when disciplining them. if the first child does something naughty tell them that they need to try to be good so they can teach the new baby how to do everything. and let them help in anyway possible. idk if this helped you any but good luck and congrats on the new baby.
Involve your first child in everything to do with the second child. Do not let family members pay sole attention to the new baby. Let the first child be the big brother/sister by celebrating that title when the new baby comes. Don't let all the focus be on the new baby.
With my daughters, I found that their anticipation was great. They were excited to be the "big" sisters, as irishpixiegurl13 described. I let them talk to the baby and feel her kick and such. We did have some jealousy from my oldest girl when my second one arrived, and I found it was important to make time for some one-on-one attention, but otherwise there weren't many problems.
