No, the hum is the sound of the wings as they beat at between 20 and 80 times per second, depending on the species!
Geoff
The "hum" you hear is just their wings beating so fast. I love watching these animals!
Yes... hummingbirds DO hum.... The reason is that they do not know the words...
The sound of the wings beating so fast is what makes the humming.
Its flight leads to its name: its 70 wing-beats a second cause it to buzz like a fly. It can also hover like a helicopter, and fly backwards as well as forwards: no other bird is capable of doing this.
This minute animal is warmblooded like all birds- that is, whatever the temperature may be outside, its body temperature of about 107°F remains constant.
Since it is very small, the relationship between the surface area of its body and its weight is very important. In view of the fact that its surface area is very large in relation to the bird's low body weight, the heat loss is very high. To compensate for this heat loss, it must be constantly on the move; and since in order to move it has to feed its muscles, it is forced to eat all the time.

Have you ever had an "interaction" with a hummingbird? Did it acknowledge your presence? One day in the garden, a pesky pigeon was wanting to eat on our flowers. I got out the broom to chase it away. The pigeon flew to the roof next door to wait until I went inside, only to return after I...

I remember reading somewhere that the hummingbird has an incredibly short life span. Is that true?

Just had to share - I was just out in my backyard and a hummingbird flew past me so close that I flinched! I remember when I was about ten our family was vacationing at a secluded lake at the end of a long, bumpy, horribly narrow, logging road in northern British Columbia - I saw a...
