In a nutshell--it is the belief in the existence of God, but that God is unknowable. We cannot discern anything about God imperially, therefore nothing about God can be discerned. It is a fundamental rejection of the concept of divine revelation.
Ehh, not quite. It is when you aren't sure if there is or isn't a god, so you don't go to church but you don't argue against religion. Its open-mindedness, and agnostics are usually okay with hearing both sides.
The way I've always understood it, agnosticism is willingness to believe in god, should he suddenly make his presence known. In other words, agnostics are open to the idea of god, if evidence ever presents itself, where as atheists firmly believe that there are no gods at all, and there is sufficient proof to make that judgement already.
Agnosticism is the belief that man cannot be certain of the nature or existence of God, the existence of life after death, or the origin of the universe. Agnosticism is often coupled with empiricism, the view that knowledge can come only from experiences gained through the senses. To agnostics anything that cannot be perceived by the senses cannot be proved and is therefore unknowable. Unlike atheists, who deny the existence of God, agnostics hold that one cannot be sure of God's existence.
The term "agnostic" was coined in 1869 by the British scientist Thomas H. Huxley. Some of the world's outstanding philosophers have been agnostics. Among them are Immanuel Kant, Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and David Hume. Famous American agnostics include William James and George Santayana.

When speaking of religion and someone says they are an "agnostic", how should a Christian respond?

Why do so many people have misperceptions about atheism and agnosticism?
by Sophia Angelique 11 years ago
This perception by some that Agnosticism is somehow more holier than Atheism is nothing but splitting hairs.Neither runs their lives by God.By virtue of the fact that agnostics say that they don't know if there is a God or not, it's quite obvious that they certainly don't run their lives by one,...

Do animals know anything about God?I would like to know that do animals have their own Gods? Or they are unaware abut the existence God?

Atheist say that they can't prove that God do not exist,so.......that make them just as ignorant about the matter as those that they say can't prove that He does. That is a clear view of the Pot calling the kettle black.Do you agree. There is more proof that He does exist than He doesn't.They don't...

I think not. Some say that they just aren't sure, but they figure "I'm a good person, so if there is, I'm fine". I'd say that person is actually a theist.Others say they don't know and don't care. They never think about any possible rewards or punishmentts. They are actually atheists.I say...
