   Where did the term and fascination with "haters" originate?  What is its allure to youth?

   Having more money, power, fame, ambition etc. breeds envy. Being that success is a catalyst for "haters", claiming to have many of them indirectly boasts success. Given the boastful nature of our culture and the fascination with achieving youthful success as well as the proliferation of social media  popular amongst youth, "haters" are more abundant than ever especially within the young demographic.

   Never thought there was a fascination with "haters" myself. It always just seemed to be a term applied by some to describe others they perceived to be jealous of themselves. Sometimes the term is accurate, sometimes not, but it is often used to discredit others with legitimate problems. See "entitlement mentality" for the political version of the same thing.

   Basically, people are acting more and more stupid- the first thing that comes to mind is 'tanning mom'- that mom that's under scrutiny for taking her child to a tanning bed. She looks like she's made of leather and is obviously not a fantastic parent, so when people criticize her, she calls them haters. Calling someone a hater is basically just saying "you make a good point, I am a ridiculous person and should not be taken seriously, but I'm going to make it about you and how jealous you are of me". At least that's how I see it... Its a term for people who can't figure out a good comeback.

   The word not long ago was rarely heard. Now it's been coopted by politicians, pundits and issues advocates as a derogatory for those who don't see things their way, it's being worked to death. Give it another year at the outside, and it'll have been worn out. They'll move on to a new one, and the English language will have lost yet another formerly good word.
