What reasons do people give for not wanting society to help the homeless?
They blame the poor, thanks to meritocracy. They blame them not only for being homeless but for 'crumbing' up the streets. And if they steal to survive? That's demon status, even more reason they deserve to live in the cold.
If people knew the real stories behind poverty I doubt they could remain so ignorant the problem is our ideologies are based on the idea that the poor create their own plight.
What do we do?
Some people believe the panhandlers are not really homeless but find it as an easier method of getting money than finding a decent job.
In some cases this is true Harmony, and thanks to those actual bums so many others get stereotyped and stigmatized.
i have know many homeless people in my life including myself. what society either doesn't understand or doesn't want to understand is that a lot of these people don't want help. they don't want a home, a job or any of the other things that society seems to think they need. for a person to understand this, they have to be homeless themselves and i'm not talking about acting like it to do a a study.
I agree, this is a very hard concept for people to understand and it's true, some do want to live free how only homelessness allows. But there are people who do not want to be homeless and we can't forget to help them
we shouldn't forget about anyone but we can only help the ones who want to be helped and we can only do so much even for them. if we try to help and do too much, we are not actually helping but we are causing them to become dependable on handouts.
At what point should we stop helping someone who asks for help? There are always going to be those who choose the lifestyle. But there are many people who don't choose it, they just lack the mental capacity or social upbringing to adjust to society.
if someone is mentally disabled, then they are the ones we should be helping. if being homeless is hurting them , steps should be taken to either put them in an institution or a place where they can get help. as for people who we try to help and they
I have been working with the homeless ever since 1997, and one thing I have learned is that there are literally hundreds of categories of homeless people.
In fact, a considerable number of the homeless are in that position by choice. They would rather live in the streets where they are not strapped with any responsibilities and do not have to live by any of the rules of the "establishment."
And many others are homeless because they are avoiding something or the other, such as paying child support and going to prison because there are warrants out for their arrest.
Finally, the vast majority of the homeless do not fit the stereotype. They are not dirty and unkempt, they do not live in the streets or under bridges, and they are not mentally ill or alcoholics/drug addicts. They are "every-day people" -- it is just that they are usually "living from pillar to post" (e.g. bunking with relatives, friends and other associates).

Have you ever been homeless? Are you judgemental of those who are?I believe that many Americans are but a paycheck away from homelessness. I KNOW that even successful, well put together folks can end up living in a van, RV, car, or if they are lucky, the couch of a friend or loved...
