Can a blood clot go away on it's own without taking medication?
What kind of blood clot is it and where is it located? Are we talking blood clots in the legs?
It is in my right leg in the calf area. I have no idea as to the type of blood clot it is.
That would be a deep venous thrombosis and yes they can go away on their own, but bear watching so they don't break loose and travel and lodge somewhere else like the lungs. The body has a clotting cascade and a mechanism for dissolving clots. There
One more question, Susan. Did you by chance take Yaz?
If the blood clot is in a large artery it can be dangerous.Usually blood clots require a blood thinner medication in that case. I don't mean to scare you, but I have seen a blood clot travel to a patient's lung and she almost died. If this is a little small clot in a small vessel the risks are less, but it is still something to get checked by a doctor.
Thanks Pam. I am being monitored with ultra sounds. They don't want to put me on any medication due to RSD. I see my doctor again in June and I'll ask him then if he still feels that I should not go on any medication.
I am glad you are being monitored closely. I hope it dissolves on its own.
The usual treatment involves anticoagulation, but if that is contraindicated serial ultrasounds are done to make sure the blood clot (thrombosis) doesn't grow. There are other treatments available, depending on the location of the clot. Your physician is in the best position to advise you of the most appropriate treatment options for your particular situation, but yes, the body does have a natural mechanism for dissolving clots.
Thank you for answering my question. The blood clots went away on their own.
kittythedreamer, No I've never taken Yaz. I had to look it up as I've heard of it.
Okay, good thing. There's links between blood clots and Yaz that are coming out...I've seen it myself so I wanted to be sure.
no. and if I were you I would seek medical attention- a blood clot can cause serious problems- depending on it's size- a clot can clog an artery, cause A HEART ATTACK, GET STUCK IN A LUNG, CAUSE A STROKE- as it moves, (AND IT WILL) move throughout your circulatory system.
this is NOT the forum for discussion for such things... IMHO- unless you personally know some medical personnel. ( I was almost an RN....)
I agree with you about the potential serious probs that a clot can cause & the importance to get medical help, but I don't see any probs with raising it as a discussion point. One positive aspect for raising such points ,there cld be new treat's o
